DRC REVIEW The Art of Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

I received a digital copy of this book from Dark Horse Publishing for reviewing purposes. I can not comment on the quality of the book or the final product only the images inside

I love this game, both this one and New Order. The concept art in this book is just about the same as some of the ones you find throughout the game but there is so much more. I love looking at all the concept art at all the time they took to create these places and the minute details of the clutter and the propaganda. Also in this book you can find detailed designs of the enemy robots, machinery and weaponry. My favorite section is the character bios where it gives you a bit more information on each of the major characters. BJ looks pretty good for being in his fifties. I liked all the retro posters. It's amazing how much time they put into this to make the setting and how immersive it can get.

This a great book for collectors.

ARC REVIEW Only The End Of The World Again by Neil Gaiman

Only the End of the World Again

Neil Gaiman

Art by Troy Nixey, Matthew Hollingsworth, P. Craig Russell

Story: It's the end of the World, again. Adjuster Lawrence Talbot has set up in the quiet little town of Innsmouth, which smells of fish no matter where you go. Lawrence discovers through a series of odd meetings that the people of Innsmouth are setting up the end of the world and the key for these events the blood of a werewolf, in other words Lawrence. But it's always the end of the world and only by some small action or pure luck is it diverted.

Art: Hit and miss. Some of it was very nicely done, the werewolf and some of the other supernatural elements were nicely done and looked beautiful and but the people's features were overly exaggerated in a way that made them seem lumpy, it's the best word I can think of to describe them. The actual story is only about 50 pages long the rest of 100 some odd pages are scans of the sketching process. So it's the book twice over showing the initial sketch to the more detailed drawing before inking and coloring. It was nice to thumb through and see the process but it's not something I'm typically interested in.

Review: Overall it was an interesting story, I would be interested in reading the original prose that Gaiman wrote, but the illustrations do add something to the story, and it's nice to have that visualization there. It was strange and weird and just the kind of thing I like.

ARC REVIEW Dark Horse Comics Predators: Hunters

Predator: Hunters

Chris Warner

Art by: Francisco Ruiz Velasco

Dark Horse ComicsIssues: 1-5

Story: A covert-ops group of mercenaries has one job, kill all Predators. The brutal aliens that come down to Earth to hunt us has been happening for as long as man has been on this planet and it's time to stop them. This group lead by a generational hunter of Predators, a former drug lord, and a bunch of former military have devoted their lives to stopping them, because all of them are lone survivors of past Predators and most of then have killed one. Newest recruit Enoch Nakai is one such lone survivor and someone the military labeled crazy and discharged after he managed to kill one after it slaughtered the entire base. They have word now that a isolated island in a South Pacific archipelagos is hiding a Predator. Everything should go smoothly once they get there but not everything is as it seems on the island as the Hunters become the Hunted.

Art: That's some scary ass Predator, it looks so primal; well for good reason. The art was really good. It was wonderfully detailed and colored. With some pretty nifty variant art in the back. I love how dark they were yet you could still see so much detail. The human characters, as well, were really brought to life the action and the gore was exceptionally done.

Review: This was not expected, it had a great twist there. A very 'The Most Dangerous Game' feel to it. I really liked this story it was something different and the character so diverse and the fact that some of them came from other series was a nice touch. I hope there will be more with this cast of characters.

ARC REVIEW Dark Horse Comics: Harlequin Valentine by Neil Gaiman

Harlequin Valentine
by Neil Gaiman
Art by John Bolton
Dark Horse Books
second edition

Harlequin finds his Colombine and on Valentines he gives her his heart, literally. But in a typical twisted way Neil Gaiman takes the Commedia dell'Arte to a whole new level. In the story the invisible Harlequin follows his Colombine around the city which leads to an unexpected twist for our clown and his love. I learned about Commedia dell'Arte in High School theatre and was glad to see a modern twist to the story especially by Gaiman. The art was fantastic, stunning really. My only complaint it that lettering was tiny, reading it on my computer I had to zoom in so much just to read the words, hopefully it is different in print.

ARC REVIEW Dark Horse Comics: Aliens Defiance vol 2

ALIENS

Defiance

vol 2

Dark Horse Publishing

Story by Brian Woods
Art by Stephen Thompson, Tony Brescini, Eduardo Francisco, Dan Jackson

Story:We pretty much pick up where we left off in vol 1. Hollis discovers she has one of those things inside her. Instead of killing it she thinks it would be wise to study it so they can find better ways to kill them. Davis and Zula are hesitant but they agree to Hollis' plan. Davis retrofits one of the cargo holds into a giant cryo chamber. Hollis successfully removes the creature and Davis transports it to the cryo hold where they successfully hold the thing, for a while. All the while Zula who is in constant pain keeps thinking back to the transmissions her doctor sent her about coming back to Earth and turning herself in and how she can have it to where she won't face any punishments. But the makeshift cryo hold has caused damage to the ship and now not even the cryo hold is failing top it all off with pirates attacking and Zula has decided the only way to go is home. But first they have to get rid of the Alien. Once they get to Earth things don't go quite as they planned but Zula ok with that she's not a quitter she can find a way.

Art: For the most part beautiful artwork. The first three episodes the main characters were drawn really inconsistently. Zula's head would completely change shape from different perspectives. The latter half of the book it's wonderfully drawn. I am constantly amazed how beautifully scary the xenomorphs are drawn especially the queen.

Review: Wow. Hollis reveals she has a xenomorph in her and all I'm thinking is, "that is a queen!"
The story just keeps getting better and better and when you think all is hopeless Zula is there with a solution. It does have a bit of a bittersweet triumphant CLIFFHANGER ending but man oh man. I think the story flowed better in this one than the first volume it definitely exciting, I couldn't put it down.

ARC REVIEW Overwatch Anthology Vol 1

Overwatch Anthology vol 1
Dark Horse Publishing
Blizzard Entertainment

Scripts by: Robert Brooks, Matt Burns, Andrew Robinson, Micky Neilson, Michael Chu, James Waugh
Art by: Bengal, Nesskain, Gray Shuko, Jeffrey “Chamba” Cruz, Miki Montlló, Joe Ng, Espen Grundetjern (colorist)
Lettering: Richard Starkings and Comicraft's John Rushell, Jimmy Betancourt and Albert Deschesne

 McCree – Train Hopper

Script: Robert Brooks
Art: Bengal

Jesse McCree is hitching a ride on the express train when Opción Dos starts to hijack the train. Against his better judgment because he knows he’s just going to get blamed for it stops the hijacking.

McCree's  story was a good one, he completely deserves his reputation even if he is trying to move on from the past. He's more of the unsung hero. I really enjoyed Bengal's art. His style of the manga/anime in the digital spectrum fits in great with what Blizzard has for this game.

Reinhardt – Dragonslayer

Script: Matt Burns
Art: Nesskain
As Reinhardt and Brigitte are traveling they come a small village that is practically being held hostage by a ruthless gang demanding protection money. Reinhardt ever the hero decides he can save them.

Of course Reinhardt is going to stick up for the little people, it would be going against his nature to do. It's an exciting story and well written and put together. I loved the his speech while he was putting on the armor. Nesskain's art is beautiful I love all the clean lines and detail.

Junkrat & Roadhog – Going Legit
Script: Robert Brooks
Art: Gray Shuko
Junkrat and Roadhog attempt to go legit when a business man offers them a job. Take out the bad guys and save the hostages, discreetly. But in the typical Junkrat fashion it all gets blown to hell, literally. It’s not the clean cut job they were hoping for but it’s exactly what the business man was hoping would happen.

This was hysterical. Junkrat's almost non-stop commentary and completely obliviousness of their actions it's no wonder they are the comic relief of the game. Gray Shuko has done artwork for Blizzard so it's no wonder he does such a spot on job for their comic.

Symmertra – A Better World

Script: Andrew Robinson
Art: Jeffery “Chamba” Cruz
Symmetra is working with the Vishkar Corporation which has a bid in Rio. They lose the bid to a local contractor but also a known slum lord. Symmetra is then charged with the task of digging up dirt on the man, only she can’t find any. Symmetra starts thinking of another way to get him out when everything goes wrong. Even though they tell her it’s for the better Symmetra is having doubts.

This story was just kinda there for me, it was good but seemed like it needed more. The art reminded me of Big Hero 6, not that it was bad I liked it, it's just in that style.

 Pharah - Mission Statement
Script: Andrew Robinson
Art: Nesskain
Pharah and her team take on an Anubis A.I. that has broken and has been corrupting every nearby electronic. With her team dying around her Pharah is faced with the moral question of Team before mission or mission before the team?

I really liked this one. Action packed emotional, some great backstory, and more awesome art from Nesskain.

Torbjörn – Destroyer
Script: Micky Neilson
Art: Gray Shuko
Torbörn heads to Boklovo to stop a rampaging Titan class Omnic. Originally built to build the one has been retrofitted to destroy instead. Torbjörn was one for the original designers and was the obvious choice to stop this one. Once inside he faces an old acquaintance.

It doesn't give a whole lot of backstory onTorbörn but it gives enough to know what kind of a character he is. With more spot on art by Gray Shuko.

 Ana – Legacy
Script: Andrew Robinson
Art: Bengal
Ana and her team are moving a group of scientist before the evil Talon gets them. But the enemy is ready for them with snipers of their own. To Ana her team mates are her family and the enemy snipers are killing her family Ana moves quickly to eliminate them first. But the last one Ana makes a mistake she hesitates and it costs her everything.

Another one I really liked.

Ana – Old Soldiers

Script: Michael Chu
Art: Bengal
This takes place sometime after Legacy. Soldier 76 is on the hunt for something when he comes across a wanted poster that leads him to an isolated compound. Hoping to uncover more information he instead discovers two old friends that may or not be on his side any more.

Yep loved this one too. Putting all the pieces together of the who's who and what happened.

Junkenstien – Halloween Special
Plot: Michael Chu
Script: Matt Burns
Art: Gray Shuko
A Halloween party for the Overwatch group. McCree has just wrapped up a scary story when Rein says he has an even scarier story. It’s about a righteous ruler and a mad scientist trying to raise the dead, and deals being made with the wrong kind of people.

A fun little comic that is perfect for Halloween season.

Reflections – Holiday Special
Script: Michael Chu
Art: Miki Montlló
Tracer is rushing to the store to get her Emily a Christmas gift but get distracted by a mugging and misses the store by seconds, lucky the family she rescued comes to her rescue by giving her a gift. Meanwhile Winston is left waiting for Emily and Tracer and wondering what everyone else is up to.

A nice pensive story about what the character of Overwatch do around the holidays. Miki Montlló art looks like it should be a cartoon, I love it. I can almost see the characters moving.

Binary

Script: Matt Burns and James Waugh
Art: Joe Ng
Color: Espen Grundetjern
In what starts like the movie Jaws, Torbjörn goes hunting a rogue Bastion in a remote Swedish town. But once he finds the Bastion he quickly realizes something is wrong with it. Torbjörn now must rescue the peaceful Bastion from the panicked villagers.

If Quint had sided with the giant shark instead, I imagine something like this. It was a fun short story of how Torbjörn found Bastion. Joe Ng and Espen Grundetjern did a wonderful job on the art.

Uprising
Script: Michael Chu
Art: Gray Shuko

London, England. The Onmic are rebelling and the entire city is a war zone. McCree, against orders, is already there assessing the situation. Meanwhile the Prime Minister does not want Overwatch involved. Soldier debates whether to send in a team or not. Only after a conversation with Tracer does he know the answer to that question, he sends in Tracer, Mercy, Rein, and Torb.

Corresponding with the Uprising season it's a nice little insight to what when on.

Overall, full disclosure, I don't play the game but my hubby does so most of the day that's all I hear about. If I have a question I just ask him, he loves it it gives us something to talk about together instead of him talking about OW while I talk about books. I love storylines and well Overwatch really doesn't have one but when you get to the back stories and the webcomics that's the story I crave. I loved learning more about the characters and enjoying the fantastic art. Blizzard is pretty good about doing side and back stories to go with their games, when I got back into computer games it was because Diablo 2. I'm not much for online competition, I hate playing against other people. But as graphic novels go and being part of the Overwatch franchise this is a great item for any heroes collection.

Also coming out in a couple days...

ARC REVIEW Dark Horse Comics Aliens: Defiance

Aliens: Defiance

Dark Horse Comics

By: Brian Wood
Art by: Tristan Jones (Illustrations), Massimo Carnevale (Illustrations), Riccardo Burchielli (Illustrations), Dan Jackson (Colorist), Tony Brescini (Illustrator), Nate Piekos (Letterer)

Story: Colonial Marine Zula Hendricks was sent on a mission with a bunch of Wayland-Yultani synthetics. She was just supposed to type in a key to the computer giving over the rights from the abandoned ship over to WY as salvage. What happens next Zula doesn’t remember she was knocked unconscious and when she woke up she was still on board with a handful of the synths remaining. One of the synths in particular is helping her with the designation Davis 01.
Davis tells her what happened something was brought on board and it killed the whole crew and when they boarded the strange aliens started to kill the synths. Davis managed to shoot them all out the airlock along with most of the other synths. Davis further tells her that WY has plans to bring back a specimen so they can weaponize it. Zula understanding what she is hearing also picks up on the fact that Davis has gone against his programming. Davis admits it and again surprised her by saying he has evolved into something better he has taught himself new things and to let WY get its hands on something as dangerous as these creatures would be horrible. After barely surviving the first time Zula agrees with Davis and together they begin to thwart WY at every turn.

The Aliens are not the only thing Zula is battling right now she has massive spinal damage due to a previous and only mission. Zula is dealing emotionally, psychologically, and physically with the damage and pain she’s going through. Davis and Zula become friends they even pick up a sole survivor at a filling station and continue to do what they think is right but Davis has secrets of his own.

Art: The art was my favorite thing about this but it’s not surprising when you have fantastic artist like Tristan Jones and Massimo Carnevale. The illustrations were just so beautifully detailed and dark, it’s dark and gloomy in that typical Alien style but not so dark you lose the fine details. Massimo’s work on the covers and the chapter breaks is stunning, there is one that I would love to have a print of to hang on my wall.

Overall: I love the Alien franchise, I have loved it since my sister first showed me Alien as a kid in the late 80’s. (Yeah, my mom wouldn’t let me watch horror movies like Halloween or Friday the 13th but she was ok with Alien) I haven’t read as many Alien comics as I would like, aside from Sandman they were one of the first ones I did read when I first got into comics. I think Zula is a perfect fit with the typical type heroine we normally see in these roles. I think I like her even more because she is so broken. I loved the tie in with Alien: Isolation and Amanda Ripley. The story is great it’s so much more than just fighting aliens, there’s great character development and the relationship between Davis and Zula, I like where it’s going. This was a great one I really look forward to the rest of the series.

ARC REVIEW Dark Horse Comics: Life and Death mini series

Life and Death

Dark Horse Comics

Predator and Prometheus

Writer: Dan Abnett
Artist: Andrea Mutti (Prometheus), Brian Thies (Predator)
Colorist: Rain Beredo
Cover Artist: David Palumbo

The story starts off in Predator, where a group of colonial marines are to assist the Weyland-Yutani in making sure the planet isn’t being illegally strip mined. Not only do they find evidence of another company there but a strange horse shoe shaped alien craft that is being protected by a group of ruthless hunters. The colonial marines are split into two groups as one distracts the Predators and the other sneaks on board the alien craft. But something happens and the original pilot wakes up and takes off with the marines still on board. In the second chapter, continued in Prometheus, the engineer takes off and lands on another planet. The marines exit off the ship only to run into a bunch of xenomorphs, they are rescued by a small group of survivors including a Predator they named Ahab. This just keep going from bad to worse when the Engineer wake up another one of his kind and starts hunting the survivors. It continues in Aliens Life and Death.

Art: Absolutely beautiful, both Brian Thies and Andrea Mutti did a remarkable job depicting the alien landscape, space and the Xenomorphs, Predators, and Engineers. The level of detail in each is impressive. So much of the story is told in the art and I think they did a great job telling their part.

Review: Overall, I think this was a great crossover between the three, and so far the story is captivating and the art beautiful. One thing I have noticed about Alien and Predator comics is that always just seem to throw you into the story and then fill in the blanks as you go. There is minimal character development but each new one brings in more characters. The Weyland-Yutani company plays more of a part in Predators and the ruthlessness of the company comes out very clear especially when the representative is willing to sacrifice the Marines to the Predators in order to get the alien spacecraft back to the company.

ART BOOK REVIEW The Art of Metal Gear Solid V

I received a digital copy of this book from Dark Horse Publishing for reviewing purposes. I can not comment on the quality of the book or the final product only the images inside.

I Love MGS! Phantom Pain was an absolutely beautiful game, visually. This art book contains concept art, storyboards, and sketches for Phantom Pain, Ground Zeroes, and the unfinished DLC Kingdom of Flies. Each in a section of it's own consisting of location, character, interface and promotional art. The Phantom Pain section also includes weapons, machines, iconography, items and resources.

I loved all the concept art sometimes that art is more like a oil painting. It's interesting to see all the small details that went into the small things like the signs, the miscellaneous stuff you would find around mother base. The weapons chapter was pretty cool (being digital) I could zoom in on them and see all the detail in the wood stocks and the rust and scraps on the guns.

Overall, This would be a great art book for MGS collectors, I know I want one.
