ARC REVIEW A Raven's Heart by K.C. Bateman

Okay wow, This is the second in K.C. Bateman's Secrets and Spies series but can be read as a standalone. I loved this book it was a great read. The loved the complex but not complicated storyline. Heloise and Raven go from a hate to love relationship, and really it's only hate because they think they should not be attracted to each other and they are fighting it.

Raven has been tasked with protecting Heloise, she is a very talented codebreaker for the British Home Office and she has been targeted by the French along with the other code breakers. Raven is stunned by the latest message Heloise just decoded, it seems like the French are wanting to trade one of their spies for one that they have captured; Christopher Carlisle aka Kit who is an old friend of Raven's and has been missing for two years. Needing to protect Heloise but determined to save Kit he brings her with him to Spain where they meet up with bandits, gypsies and a deadly French assassin.

I love the progression of their relationship through the book, starting with smart and cutting remarks and fully under the impression that the other doesn't like them. When they realize what they have been doing it's like a flip of the switch. Raven loves her fully and completely but doesn't feel worthy of her and it all stems back to when he was kidnapped and held for ransom. When his grandfather didn't pay he was left to rescue himself. Ever since then he never wanted to rely on another person and he knew one thing he was good at was killing. After the kidnapping he joined the army to fight the French and found his niche as a spy with a talent for killing. He believes that Heloise, his Hell-cat, deserves someone better. It's up to Heloise to show him he is exactly what she needs.

Overall, there is so much to the story, all the elements of it were really good. I look forward to the rest of the guys to find their match.

Think Mr. and Mrs. Smith but with more sex, more emotional connection to the characters and instead of fighting and angry sex it's just good hard fucking. Now Alex and Evie Shaw are happily married and thinking about starting a family, but after four years of hiding the truth from each other their other life forces it's way into their HEA. The book for me started a little rocky I had a bit of a hard time getting into it but once it got to the meat of the book it was unputdownable. At one point I was holding my breath, it was exciting. I loved both characters, Alex was just alpha enough to make you hot and the fact that he accepts Evie as she is both as the woman she is and as the infamous assassin, makes him hotter. Evie is a Jill of all trades in the spy biz; an expert marksman who can shoot any thing, but also hand to hand combat and bunch of other stuff but she also is a loving and devoted wife. 

Overall, this was an excellent read.   

“Colin?” Evie asked when I gave her my attention once more. “The sexy Brit at your firm?”
Despite my complete confidence in Evie and our love and desire for each other, jealousy exploded inside my head, pounding at my temples. “Yes, the dead man who used to work with me.” I was only half-kidding.
Evie’s eyes widened in surprise, then her lashes lowered, but not before I caught the coy gleam in them. “I should have known he was a spook. He just screams 007, don’t you think?”
I growled, gripping Evie’s waist and pulling her against me. “Don’t push me, baby. Or you’re going to find yourself bent over my knee with a very red ass. And then I’ll show you exactly who your man is, by fucking you into next week.”
She looked up at me through her long, dark lashes, her brown eyes heated. “Promise?”
I stifled a groan with a curse. I was going to need to learn to control myself. If I had to spend the whole mission with a hard on, it was going to make things extremely difficult. “Behave,” I scolded. Just then, the doorman whistled and a cab pulled up to the curb.
Before climbing inside, she leaned up and whispered in my ear, “Jealousy is a sexy look on you. It makes me wet.”
For the love of…I was so screwed.
