ARC REVIEW The Butterfly Garden by Dot Hutchison

This is one of my Not Romance reads! I must emphasize this point. It is about a mad man sociopath and his son who kidnap young woman tattoos their backs with butterfly wings, rapes them repeatedly, and keeps them for a couple of years before he kills them. What makes this book unusual and what I really liked about it is the narration. If you have seen The Usual Suspects it is similar to that. The main character is sitting in an interrogation room telling her story. The thing with this is that she doesn't tell it in order she jumps back and forth so it may confuse some. It does also switch from third person through the perspective of the FBI agents and first person as the young woman tells her story. I loved this book and while there was rape it was never really described it not graphic but it lets on enough your imagination can get the hint and run with it..

The book starts off with FBI special agent in charge Victor Hanoverian observing the young woman in the next room and despite being told that she was in shock he sees something different. The young woman only known as Maya has a story to tell, one that started three years ago when she was kidnapped by a man she only knew as The Gardener. There is more to Maya though and Victor and his partner Eddison are trying to figure out what exactly happened. Maya's narrative flows in a circular motion but she does eventually get to the point. She tells of her experience as a child and how she ended up where she did and what lead up to her kidnapping, she also tells of the girls in the garden with her and the bond they formed, she also tells of The Gardener.

Overall,  I feel this is a twisted story that really pulls you in and sets you on edge. It has to be one of my favorites of the year so far.

I love small town romances so I jumped at the chance to read this new series about a not just one small town but technically two. Originally one town but because of differences was split in half the Mississippi side and the Louisiana side; one side the wealthy side and the other low income. I liked that concept instead of the railroad tracks it's a river. I'm new to Laura Trentham and I can say this will not be the last. The small town rivalry was as amusing as it was silly. I loved the connection between Cade and Monroe, how Monroe knew Cade probably better than anybody else and yet still did quite know Cade and vise versa. Cade is so caught up in others people's perception of him that he can't take Monroe at face value, he can't see that she loves him for who he is not what's in or not in his bank account. 

Everything Cade has done has been for his younger brother and sister, even when that meant leaving them. He never told anyone the real reason he left not even Monroe and he always felt he could tell her everything. Having Monroe as a friend was like a soothing balm on his crappy life but he couldn't admit why he was leaving. But leaving was the best thing he could do for himself on his own he was able to make a name of himself and finally had a break in life and became wealthy.

Monroe always thought of Cade as her knight, he was there when she needed him the most and she could tell him anything, except how she truly felt about him. Ever since that night when she was thirteen Cade has always been her constant, until he wasn't. He left with out saying goodbye and all the sudden Monroe had to figure out how to live with out him. She moved on and learned to defend herself against the things she was afraid of.

Now Cade is back and he's facing all the old prejudices he faced when he was a kids and now he's got to mend his relationship with his family, the town, and most importantly find out if he could ever have Monroe love him like he's always loved her.

Overall it was an easy going romance with some pretty funny dialogue and some really sweet romance.     

Monroe’s lips silenced the rest of his question. The champagne on his tongue was almost as intoxicating as his scent. The music from the great room drifted, muted and unrecognizable. 

As if slow dancing, Cade wrapped his arms around her and turned them enough so he could close the door, leaving them in silence, except for the ticking of a clock.     

His hands roamed her bare back, slipping inside of her dress to brush the top curves of
her buttocks. She pushed him backward against the wall. Infinitely stronger than her, he could have held his ground or taken charge at any point, but the fact that he let her lead only made her want him more. She was done listening to logic, done fighting her hunger for him. She wanted him. 

      Cupping her cheeks, he pulled his lips from hers. “And again you do the unexpected.  

     “Unwanted?” she whispered.

     “Does it look like I’m protesting?” His breath puffed against her cheek before he kissed her once more, slipping his tongue alongside hers, before his mouth retreated once more. She tipped into him seeking more. He took her weight, bracing his legs farther apart, but evaded her mouth.

     “I watched you dancing with Tarwater. What are you playing at? Is he the man you want to be seen with and I’m the one you’re keeping for the dark?” A thread of emotion in his voice tied itself around her heart and bound her. Was he jealous? Hurt? Angry? 

     “Do you think I’m using you?” She pushed off his chest. 

     “You know I’m not staying long.” 

She did know. She just didn’t want to think about the day he would walk away from Cottonbloom. And from her. “What are you getting at?” 

     “I think you get something from him you can’t get from me and vice versa. He has clout in this town, but I’m the man that you want in the dark and in your bed, aren’t I?”     “If you think all I care about is my standing in this town, why did you follow me?” 

     “Because I want you. That’s why I came.” Belligerence instead of seduction beat at his words. Underneath was a boy who did care what Cottonbloom thought of him. He hadn’t always been the poor swamp rat sneaking around in the dark. 

     “All you want is sex?” 

     “If that’s what you’re offering.” His voice softened, and he squeezed her hips and fit them together. “I can be rough and dirty and a little bit dangerous if that’s how you want me.” 

     Arousal flared even as the gentleness of his touch belied his coarse words. He skimmed his good hand from her hip to settle under her breast, his thumb running up and down the exposed skin in between. Her nipple puckered, begging for his touch.     “Is that what you want, sweetheart?” 

     Her body shifted toward his instinctively, seeking to anchor itself to him, needing to draw from his heat and strength. “Th-that’s not what I want.” Before the words were even out, she knew they were untrue, or at least a partial truth. Sex wasn’t all she wanted. But she did want it. 

     “Don’t lie to yourself or me.” He dropped his lips to the shell of her ear and nuzzled. She grabbed the lapels of his jacket. “I could take you right here, right now, with the Tarwaters and all of crazy Cottonbloom a few rooms away. And I’d make it good, Monroe. I’d make your body sing. I’d make you beg before giving you everything you need. Then, you could walk back out into that damn party like nothing happened. No one would know the things you want to do in the dark with a poor, dirty boy from Louisiana.” 

     Her body sang a song of longing and need. She wanted to stay in the dark with him the rest of the night, but there was something even more important she needed to do. With the effort of separating strong magnets, she pried her body from his, opened the door, and took him by the wrist.

ARC REVIEW Into the Whirlwind by Kat Martin

BOSS Inc. book two by Kat Martin which is part of her Brodie's Universe. Into the Whirlwind follows Dirk and Megan who started their romance in the last book. Fortunately, while it helps to have read the last book it is not imperative to follow the story. I really enjoy Kat Martin books, the action is always a grabber the romance is heartfelt and combining the two is always well thought out; especially when you are dealing with high tension situations. When I read the synopsis for the book I thought how in the world are two people going to fall in love (again) when a child has been kidnapped! As a Mom I know romance would be the last thing on my mind if one of my kids went missing. But Kat Martin made it work. I was looking forward to the tattooed bad boy's story and this did not disappoint; even if Megan did a little bit.

 Megan's son the whole reason she dumped Dirk five months prior has been kidnapped. She can't go to the cops but she knows the Dirk can help bring her boy home. Dirk calls in reinforcements and gets to work immediately; it's easy for him to find out who was behind it and find a possible location they might be holding the boy, but things aren't that easy and with the price on the little boys head in the millions it isn't going to be that easy getting him back, or tracking down the brains behind the kidnapping or the ulterior motive behind the kidnapping.

Overall, From Seattle to Argentina it is an action filled story. While Megan thought she was thinking of her son when she initially dumped Dirk her motives were kind of selfish as were the actions that followed. She obviously didn't learn her lesson about pleasing other people and sacrificing you own happiness with her first marriage. Luke Brodie plays a major role in this story and it gives you a taste of him before his own book out next year.      

ARC REVIEW Duke of Sin by Elizabeth Hoyt

Book ten of the Maiden Lane series by Elizabeth Hoyt. Boy did I pick a doozie of a book to start the series on. I don't know whether to hate Val or not, he is a right bastard. Even not having read previous book it is obvious that he was a villain in some of them, and if that wasn't enough he still is a right bastard in his own story. As much as he tries to convince Bridget that he is evil he still does stuff that proves otherwise. He's evil alright, just not entirely horrible. Bridget, I loved her, she's a child that should have been raised like that of a high born but she was born on the other side of the sheets so she trained to be a house keeper. When her mother asks her a favor Bridget, who is desperate for her mother's affection does as she asks and when she finds out she can help other people while doing it she doesn't see anything wrong with helping them even if it means having to work for the villainous Duke of Montgomery.

The proper housekeeper, Bridget Crumb, has something that Valentine Napier finds fascinating. The fact that she hasn't told him her name and makes one up for her, and that she isn't scared of him like some other people are. Bridget finds out as manipulative and mean Val can be to other people he goes out of his way to ensure the safety and well being of his staff. Val is dead set on getting a well off wife and blackmail the right people so he can come back from exile. Bridget knows his plans and does everything she can to sabotage his efforts. I halfway thing Val did half of this crap just to see what Bridget would do about it. Bridget sees both sides of Val and she really wants to understand why he does it. But as Val reveals his past Bridget's past comes out as well. I wasn't to impressed with the romantic entanglement between the two it just kind of fades in the light of Val being a prick.

Overall, I still don't know if I liked Val or not. I liked the story the interactions between Val and Bridget are amusing as he keeps doing this just to push her buttons. The whole series has piqued my interest enough I really do want to keep reading them and go back and read the 2-9 books.  

  

#TBT RC REVIEW Wicked Intentions by Elizabeth Hoyt

This weeks Throw Back Thursday is Elizabeth Hoyt's book Wicked Intentions. First Published in 2010 as the first book in her Maiden Lane series. In honor of the release of Duke of Sin book ten in the series Grand Central Publishing and NetGalley offered Wicked Intentions up for review. I had just finished reading Duke of Sin and never having read any of the previous series I though it wouldn't hurt. WOW! I can see why this series has lasted as long as it has if this was the first book. This book was nothing what I expected. I loved Lord Caire and Temperance Dews was unexpected. The whole cast of characters was intriguing and when reading about them it teased me and now I want to know more.

Temperance Dews runs a foundling house with her brother, they take in orphan or abandoned children until an age where they can be apprenticed out. It was started by their father and are now struggling to keep it open after the death of their patron. Lazarus Huntington, Lord Caire, is looking for a killer. Two months ago some one brutally murdered his mistress, he is determined to find out who did it. Lord Caire however needs someone to help him find the right kind of people to talk to in St. Giles; Caire for some reason thinks Mrs. Dews is the right person for the job. He even pays her back rent and enough monies to feed and clothe the children until he has tracked down the killer. He has also promised to help Mrs. Dews find a new patron for her foundling house by introducing her to the right people.

Lord Caire is drawn to Mrs. Dews he can see the passion she hides behind her plain and starchy facade. Caire means to draw out that passion any means necessary but first they must find a killer. Mrs. Dews wants to hate Caire but the sexual attraction is almost to much for her to handle. That lust is only sin deep and the more time they spend together and learn about each other they truly come to care for each other.

Mrs. Dews leads Caire around St. Giles but in their search they attract the attention of the killer and soon find them selves the target. The killer seems to know where they will be, but they have an unlikely ally in the Ghost of St. Giles. A harlequin dressed masked vigilante who is thought of as a ghost who haunts St. Giles to seek vengeance against his death.

Overall this was a great book, I think it's safe to say the rest of the series has ended up on my want to read list.      

ARC REVIEW To Love a Wolf by Paige Tyler

I absolutely love this series. I love the everything about it; the direction Paige Tyler went with the shifters, they are not typical shifter types. I love Landry Cooper, I have since the first book, and I have been (not so) patiently waiting for his book. But the wait was worth it! Tyler's writing style as always addictive. Fast paced action to grip you into the story; romance to make you swoon and break your heart a little when it has to then completely makes it up to you.  

Landry Cooper has been there for three of his pack mates when they found their "The One" as a sounding board and a confidant, now it's time to find his. Everly was pleasantly surprised when the hot cop standing behind her in line at the bank asked her out, she was even more surprised when he ended up saving her life during a bank robbery minutes later. Everything is all sunshine and roses from the start with Landry and Everly. Landry knows beyond a doubt that Everly is "The One" and he's preparing himself for revealing his secret to her and hope for the best. Enter the conflict...

Everly's family.  

 Everly has very overprotective brothers and a father, they have been since the brutal murder of her mother when she was little. Introducing Landry to them was suppose to be easy, they would love him just as much as she loves him. But almost immediately they try to break them apart and they aren't shy about using force to do it. When Landry is forced to reveal himself before he was ready it just may have cost him the HEA he was looking for with Everly.

Also in the story is a wedding....    

It was very nicely done and didn't take away from Landry and Every's story, it was a nice touch to see Mac and Gage get married.  

Overall, this was another great action packed romance. Love it. Can't wait for more.
