ARC REVIEW Passion on Park Avenue by Lauren Lane

Central Park Pact #1, The series is a new one from a favorite author of mine it's about an unlikely friendship between three women, socialite Audrey Tate, the classy Claire Hayes, and the self made billionaire Naomi Powell.What brought these three women together was they had slept with the same man, Claire's husband. They met when they were all supposed to be at his funeral all wearing the same shoes and all with identical watches. They all understood what a lousy excuse for a man he was and made a pact that they would protect each other from making the same mistake again. Over the next couple of months the bonds of friendship formed and they became close friends. 

Naomi Powell hit it big with a subscription based accessories box. Growing up poor in the Bronx toughened her up and lets her appreciate all her accomplishments.She's about to move into a perfect new office and apartment when she gets a call letting her know that her application for to move in to an apartment at 517 Park Ave has been accepted. She lived their for a short time as a child in the servants quarters with her mother, it was horrible and it ended just as bad and she knew the family that ruined her childhood still lived there. She planned to move in long enough to rub it in how successful she now was but what happened when she got there changed everything.

Oliver Cunningham was the ban of Naomi's existence when she lived at 517 Park, and unfortunately for her plans as an adult he's completely changed. Oliver was a disappointment to his father by not going into the family business, instead he became an architect. First his mother died of cancer and then shortly after that his father was diagnosed with alzheimer's; his life has revolved around his father's illness the only person to catch his interest is the redhead who moved in next door who seemed to have an instint hate-on for him. The more time Naomi and Oliver spend together however the more they like each other and one thing leads to another and they are in love but with Naomi's past a secret it's only another matter of time before the other shoe drops and Oliver finds out who she really is and why she moved in to 517 Park in the first place.

Overall, it's another great LL romance. Enemies to Lovers with plenty of snark and humor, and what LL does best bring a bit of New York to those of us who can only dream about it her descriptive narrative is wonderful. I love the connection Naomi made with Audrey and Claire the sisterly bond they formed to look out for each other, I look forward to their stories as well.     

ARC REVIEW Paradox by Catherine Coulter

FBI Thriller #22, One of the on going series I love. Savich and Sherlock are two of my favorite characters. In the past these books were more Romantic Suspense but now the romance has pulled back and let the suspense/thriller aspect take precedence, which is fine because she's really good at that. Once again we deal with two distinct storylines working in tandem. Savich gets called down to a quiet little town in Maryland when the Chief of Police, Ty Christie, witness a murder out on the lake in the early morning hours and the rowboat that the murder was committed on was rented out to a friend and fellow FBI, Special Agent Sala Porto. In the search for the murder victim they also uncover bones that have been at the bottom of the lake for years. Savich and Sherlock discover that an old enemy connects them to the murdered woman in Maryland, while they deal with tracking this insane person Sala and Ty try to figure the origin of the bones.

I really did enjoy this one the going back and forth between the stories and the characters it flowed pretty easily. Both stories were exciting, intriguing, and really good reading. I love Catherine Coulter's writing style, I wouldn't have read all 22 books in the series if I didn't, the characters are easy to connect with and empathize with Sala and Ty have the start of a romance but it is not the main focus of the story. I hope we can see more of Leigh "Gunny" in the future she was a special character I liked her. Overall this was a great read, out Coulter's recent books in the series this is a favorite.       

ARC REVIEW The Secret of Flirting by Sabrina Jeffries

Sinful Suitors #5, Leave it to me to find a series where I keep missing books, which in all honesty is fine it can be read as a standalone; there was only one part at the beginning where all the previous characters were stand around talking that I felt like I was missing out on something but it was a short scene. This was a fun book to read and Jeffries is always reliable for witty repartee and a great romance. The banter between Fulkham and Monique, especially the first time they meet, is so great it had me giggling and it only got better. The story does focus more on the relationship and them working out their feelings than the mystery of who is trying to kill the Princess but it worked for me. Fulkham is a spymaster and has made it his life's work to know everyone's secrets. Monique is the daughter of an actress and the granddaughter of a princess who was disowned when she ran away and married the man she loved an actor.

Fulkham is doing business in Dieppe and at the insistence of his brother's friend Hart they go to see a play. Hart guaranteed the lead actress a worth it, Fulkham is a bit peeved not only because Hart was right the lead actress is stunning and he can't seem to take his eyes off of her. But when Hart manages to get them backstage to meet her Fulkham is antagonistic and starts an argument with her; Monique hates the facts that she is attracted to him a pompous pig headed man who prefers tragedies over comedies. Three years later Fulkham and Monique meet again only this time she is Princess Anne of Chaney who is the running of becoming the new ruler of Belgium. Monique was approached by her Uncle to stand in for her cousin Princess Anne until she recovers from her illness in return Monique and her Grandmother who is suffering from dementia will be welcomed back home to the castle in Chaney. Fulkham keeps trying to trick Monique into revealing who he knows her to be but Monique is good. Fulkham is determined to find out why but when there is an attempt on Monique's life Fulkham switches gears to figure out who would want the Princess dead. 

Fulkham and Monique have great chemistry, they are quite the pair. When the two meet again Monique is scared of what Fulkham can do, he has the power to out her as an imposter and ruin Anne's chance at ruling Belgium. She wants nothing more than to avoid him at all cost but Fulkham plays a very important role in the London Conference and Monique must play nice. The more time she spends with him the more she likes him and when he is determined to save her life rather than letting the charades go on she realizes just how much she loves him. But with so much still standing in the way of their happiness Monique must learn to trust Fulkham.           

Overall, I did enjoy this one. You can always count on Sabrina Jeffries for a well written historical romance. The intrigue was well done and the literary license with the London Conference of 1830 was a nice touch. It happened but there was no Princess Anne in the running for ruler of Belgium.

ARC REVIEW Undone By You by Kate Meader

Chicago Rebels #3, We take a break from the the daughters of Clifford Chase and bring you the sexy Chicago Rebels GM Dante Moretti and the All Star Defenseman Cade Burnett. Kate Meader hooked her writers claws into me with her Hot in Chicago series and like that series there is also one M/M romance in the series and this is it. I'm usually not one for M/M romance except in cases like this it's part of a series and I have previously been introduced to them, like them and Meader has hinted to the romance and I am rooting for them even before the book starts. Way to many times I've picked up a M/M romance and just hated the characters and the plot. This one much like her other, Melting Point, is so hot. It's a little longer than your typical novella it feels like a full length book with as much stuff is in it the relationship development and the conflict and the sex scenes so yummy, this is a very fulfilling novella. 

Cade is freakin' adorable, he's still in the closet and has had a crush on Dante since he was a teenager and Dante was still playing hockey professionally. (There is about a decade age difference between the two). Dante has been open about his homosexuality for years now, even though it ruined his relationship with his parents he couldn't keep lying about who he really was any more. This book runs pretty much parallel with So Over You the second book of the series but it can be read as a stand alone if needed. 

The beginning of the book we find Dante in a private club and he sees Cade there. Dante has two feelings, joy for the fact that Cade is gay and two worry for the potential media circus if it gets out. Cade knew Dante frequented that club and got himself an invite so he could "run into" Dante there and well you know. Dante instead acts the responsible one and has already planned an explanation incase Cade is discovered there, even though his insides are jumping for joy that Cade just hit on him. Dante tries to keep it professional between them but the lure of Cade is too much for him to resist. Dante and Cade start something and keep quiet about it but when Cade starts to wonder about finally coming out Dante worries about the backlash not just with media and the fans, people will claim Dante "turned" him gay but mostly Dante worries about the relationship Cade has with his Dad. Dante doesn't want Cade to come out just for him and is willing to ruin the relationship if he has too.

Overall, Dante and Cade story was a great one. It was sweet, hot, and an emotional rollercoaster ride; and it has a really good lead up to the next book Hooked On You. 

ARC REVIEW So Over You by Kate Meader

So Over You is book two in Kate Meader's Chicago Rebels series. Three half sisters, daughters of a hockey legend, who must work together to keep the hockey team. According to the requirements in the will the Rebels must make the playoffs that year or be sold out to a conglomerate. For two of the sister it's their legacy, one the managerial role and the other a coaching role. Irresistible You, the first book, is about the oldest sister Harper Chase, she is bound and determined to make it to the playoff this year and keep her team. I wouldn't say this is a standalone, but it could be the events of the first book have only a minor impact of this story but most of the emotional development between the sister happens in the first one. Isobel was the apple of her father's eye she was born to continue on his legacy on the ice and Isobel wanted nothing more than to be the best on the ice. Until her dreams came to an end after an accident now she just wants to coach. Vadim has to redeem himself after a knee injury but first he has to get back on the ice only one thing is standing in his way, the only woman who has ever mattered to him and the same one whose father blackballed him from the NHL.

To prove herself Isobel is assigned to privately coach Vadim so he can get back into skating form. Vadim thinks it's a bad idea not because she's a woman but he doesn't trust himself around her and Isobel can afford to have gossip that she's sleeping with players tied to her name especially if she wants the head coaching job. Isobel thinks she can handle coaching Vadim even if he still makes her feel all a flutter but after the one and only one time they were together left her wanting she didn't think they were compatible. Once Vadim finds this out he makes a point to prove to her that they are, over and over again. 

Their sexual attraction isn't the problem between one particularly cruel player on the team, Vadim's little sister and his mother, and the big one Isobel has the chance to play for the gold again. She was asked to audition for the NCAA, she told no one but Vadim expecting him to be excited for her only to get the opposite reaction. This is her last chance to achieve her dream and as much of a bastard her father was and even though he's dead she still feels like she's disappointing him by not playing hockey. Vadim and Isobel have a bunch of issues to work out before they can achieve their HEA.

Overall, I loved this one. Vadim be still my heart that smokin' hot Russian is not only great with kids but once he realizes he left Isobel wanting he sees his way into her heart again. There is a lot of personal growth in this book as with the first one and as always Kate Meader is exceptional with it and the sex is so freakin' hot. I very much recommend anything she written.    

  

ARC REVIEW Caught by the Scot by Karen Hawkins

First book in a new The Made to Marry series, Caught by the Scot starts this series off fantastically. Karen Hawkins as usual bring her Historical Romantic Comedy to life. Humorous situations and witty characters it really was good read.

Conner Douglas has to get married if he wants his inheritance or else it goes to the family's blood enemy the Campbells. His sister Anna died after childbirth and left stipulated in her will that her three brothers will be married in three months time or lose it all. Conner can think of only one woman he would want to tie himself to and that is his best friends little sister Theodora Cumberbatch-Snowe. Conner foolishly thinking Thea will quickly accept his proposal and be thankful for it takes his time getting to her. But when he arrives at the house he learns she ran off and eloped with a Squire. Conner not one to give up easily runs after her certain that once she learns he wants to marry her she'll change her mind.

Thea has been in love with Conner Douglas as long as she can remember but recently she has come to the conculsion that he will never settle down and stop privateering. She has decided she just wants a house, a home a can settle in and put down roots something she has not been able to do with he r diplomatic father constantly moving the family around. So when Lancelot Fox proposed and suggested they run off to Gretna Green to get married she accepts. She almost immediately starts having second thoughts. But then Conner shows up out of the blue and fully discloses why he wants to marry her she becomes even more resolved that she must marry Lance. Lance while a completely amiable young man is a little too susceptible to suggestion and lets Conner manipulate him. Conner plans to draw out the travel time to Scotland as long as possible to show just how ill suited Lance is for Thea. Along the way they pick up a companion for Thea in the form of a fragile Miss Jane Simmons and a talkative and very forward lady's maid Alice. But the more Conner tries to convince Thea that Lance is all wrong for her the more he falls in love with the woman she has grown up to be and the more resistant Thea becomes even though she still loves Conner. Things get more so complicated when Jane falls sick and the closest doctor would be the ship doctor Conner employes on his vessel, so they travel to Conner's home. Where Conner and Thea finally have it out and Conner realizes just how much he loves her.

Overall, such a fun read. I can't wait for the two other brother's stories.

   

ARC REVIEW Enigma by Catherine Coulter

Book 21 of Catherine Coulter's FBI thriller Savich/Sherlock series.

Dillan and Lacy are back for a thrilling and mysterious case, and why not it's what they do best. Once again we have two cases going on in this book The first one Dillan and Lacy's main story Dillan saves a young pregnant woman from a crazy man who kept telling her someone was coming for her baby and only he could protect her. Dillan managed to subdue the man but shortly afterward he slipped into a coma. The pregnant girl Kara Moody went into labor and had a healthy baby boy who was then kidnapped from the maternity ward. Dillan can't leave it alone something has been bugging him about it from the beginning. Lacy and Dillan join forces with the CARD agents to help track down Baby Alex and why he was taken in the first place and how the John Doe in a coma is part of it all.

Meanwhile new to the CAU Cam Witter works with New York's Criminal Division's Jack Cabot to help track down international criminal Liam Hennessy aka Manta Ray who escaped police custody during his prison transfer. Cam and Jack follow a lead to the Daniel Boone National Forest. Hennessy didn't work alone he knew it was coming and the two people who got him out were working for a powerful person and when it ties to the murder of a young woman things get messier. Mia Prevost was dating the President's Secretary of State's only son and all the circumstantial evidence pointed right to him. Cam and Jack work together to find the connection and a way to get Hennessy back in police custody. 

Overall, this was a really good read. Both storylines were intriguing and they pull you in and have very satisfying stories. The case of the missing baby Alex deals with a mad scientist and the escape prisoner Liam Hennessy is a big political snafu. I've been a fan of Coulter and this series for over ten years I think I've only missed one book in the entire series. Sherlock and Savich are some of my all time favorite characters, I'm not to crazy about the dual storylines but this one was a really good one. I liked the slight romance brewing between Cam and Jack the light flirting that goes on between them is nice but not to distracting.

Overall, this was another outstanding emotional, quirky, and Tristan can be so sweet when he wants too. Such a sexy read and when Tristan gets over his butt hurt attitude he's a real keeper. I loved it I really did Probst always hits the spot when it comes to good contemporary romance infused with humor and tear provoking emotion.

ARC REVIEW The Turn by Kim Harrison

Prequel to Kim Harrison's the Hollow series, I love this series. I found The Hollow series at a time in my life when I had no money and I was practically stuck at home alone with a toddler. Books were my escape and the Hollows series was one of my favorite escapes. (thank you Library) I typically get bored with book series that follow one person throughout the whole series, The Hollows is one of the exceptions. After reading what books there were of the Anita Blake series (I got bored and disappointed in them), The Hollows was a breathe of fresh air. I quickly fell in love with all the characters and have a love/hate relationship with Trent; and as aggravating as the characters get sometimes I keep coming back for more. I am so emotionally invested in the characters and now we have the beginning of it all.

I have seen several reviews complaining that the beginning of the book was slow and so detailed but it needed to be. You can't have a "how it all started" book without going into detail of it got started. You can't just wash over it and get to the action, you need the build up and character development especially since they are new characters; well some of them are new. With the introduction of the two main characters Trisk and Kal and going back to the late 60's as a reader we needed to understand how it was back then for the Inderland community and being a woman. Not to mention the Elf politics that Trisk is having to deal with and the scientific jargon. I personally loved the detail Kim Harrison went into when explaining the tomato and the virus, I would not have been happy if it was just implied and not really explained.

Felecia Eloytrisk Cambri (Trisk) is at the top of her class but she has strikes against her, one she's a woman and the other she's a dark elf. She gets a pity job offer just because the college wants to keep it's 100% placement rating. But it turned out to be the best thing for her she excelled and left her lifelong rival in the dust. But Elf politics, and uber paranoid leaders send Trisk's lifelong rival Trenton Lee Kalamack, Kal (not Trent remember that Trent and Rachel are not that different in age) to go in a check her work with the promise that if he has to fix it it becomes his with only his name on it. Trisk calls upon a demon (yes that demon, I loved seeing him) and makes a deal. But Kal's petty jealousy and desire to be better than everyone else screw everything up.

Overall, I really enjoyed this one it was so nice going back to the beginning and seeing how it all started. Seeing Tanaka as a teenager was fun as well as some other characters in their younger years. I am definitely going to have to go back and reread the series.

Second book in Jennifer Probst's Billionaire Builders series is a little more serious the the first one. It deals with both Raven and Dalton dealing with the traumatic death of a loved one, one who they thought betrayed them. Raven's father was the man Dalton's mother was with when they died in a horrible car crash. Both thought the worst of the other Raven blamed Dalton's mother and hated the family for ruining her father name and reputation in the artistic community. All of the Pierce family placed the blame on the man who stole away the beloved Diana Pierce. 

Wonderfully written as always, a nice blend of chic, humor, romance and a bit of angst. Raven and Dalton both have plenty of layers giving them more depth and dimensions and making them seem very realistic. It can be read as a stand-alone which is always nice when you come into an established series and it connects Jennifer Probst other series that recently ended, Searching For, It was a nice touch especially since Izzy pops in.  

Dalton and Raven are great together with plenty of similar interest and just enough differences to make it interesting. Dalton can't figure out Raven and why she hates him so much but he can't stay away from her or her bar, a lovely antique piece that is just begging him to restore it. Dalton gets his wish when Raven's restaurant is getting a article in a magazine and Raven needs the restaurant and bar restored so it looks good in the pictures. Raven figures this is the best time to learn more about the woman who ruined her life. But what she learns is nothing like what she she thought and the closer she gets to Dalton the more she falls in love. But will the truth of their connected past bring them closer together or will it tear them apart. 

Overall, a great read. I love just about every Jennifer Probst writes and I have to say I love this one more than the first book of the series.

ARC REVIEW Mad for the Plaid by Karen Hawkins

I have been waiting for Nikolai's story from the very beginning. I was not let down you get to see the many facets of Nik from his Prince Nikolai Romanovian of Oxenburg to just Nik. I love books that start of with letters between the two main characters. Nik and Ailsa are both headstrong and stubborn, Nik however is use to knowing when to argue his point and when to drop it for later. Ailsa is use to being in charge, her father gave her the job of manager of the house and grounds and she has excelled at it. Ailsa and Nik are alike in many ways. Alisa is constantly pushing Nik's buttons to see how far she can push him. Nik has had years of court experience behind him the little Scottish woman shouldn't be able to push his buttons yet something about her just sets them all off.

Tata Natasha has gone off to visit an old friend while on this visit she disappears, not like she did the last time but kidnapped, along with a local landowner. Ailsa does her duty by informing HRH Nikolai explaining she has it handled. Nik not trusting an inexperienced person and not wanting this information to get out for fear someone might exploit the opportunity. So Nik and two of his most trusted friends and guards sneak off to help find and return Tata. Ailsa is worried that Nik might take charge and just run roughshod over her but he doesn't and even though she tries her best to do the rescue without him he's not a fool and is able to keep up with her and her men. Ailsa received a ransom note and to get to the rendezvous point in plenty of time the take the quickest but more dangerous route their. Along the way Nik and Ailsa argue over whether or not they should pay the ransom and it turns out there is a traitor in their midst. Nik and Ailsa are trying to keep from falling in each other's arms but the attraction is too strong and when they get separated from the group they admit their lust and spend what time they have together and what come after they rescue Tata will be dealt with later. Ailsa doesn't want to leave her home and Nik doesn't want the corruption of court to taint the sweet and naive Ailsa. But never fear Tata knows best.

Overall, I really liked this one, it's not my favorite of the series but it was perfect for Nik.

I am a big fan of Jennifer Probst and this is quintessential Jennifer Probst. She has outdone herself once again with her witty dialogue and romantic situations. I liked it not only because did you have the romantic entanglement between Morgan and Caleb but the reconciliation between the three brothers. When the brothers are forced to work together they must face the issues of the past before they can move forward they have to work together to make a profit in twelve months in order for Caleb to keep the company out of love and loyalty to their mother all three decide to give it ago. Morgan is the answer. 

Morgan is an all around go to gal when it comes to the rich and famous building and decorating new houses. Her clients want the Pierce Brothers and that's what they are going to get. Morgan's job it to make sure the house gets built and decorated exactly how her clients want it, but Morgan is getting mixed signals from her clients and follows her gut. 

There are sparks between Caleb and Morgan from the very beginning. Caleb doesn't want to feel an attraction to this prim and proper southern belle but everything about her makes him want her. He wants to muss up her perfect hair, and get her all dirty. She is talented and beautiful with a heart so big. Caleb knows what he wants and he won't let anything get in his way of of loving her. Even if that something is Morgan herself.  

Overall, this was another great Jennifer Probst book. Morgan and Caleb are perfect for each other. The Billionaire Builders are as wickedly delicious as they are smart and talented and I really look forward to each of their books.

ARC REVIEW The Study of Seduction by Sabrina Jeffries

Second in the Sinful Suitors series by Sabrina Jeffries, The Study of Seduction is a great fun read; another hit for Ms. Jeffries. I really enjoyed this it was such a witty read with amazing characters and humorous situations with a touch of suspense. I loved Edwin Barlow, I love heroes like him. Clarissa Lindsey is a headstrong woman who vowed never to get married.

Lady Clarissa Lindsey has been turning down suitors ever since her first season she never wanted to marry; she has her reasons. But her cousin is concerned for her safety a suitor who previously asked her her hand has been stalking her, obsessed with marring her to the point that Clarissa is scared. Clarissa's brother had to flee the country because of a duel and he recently sent a message he needed help. Not wanting to leave her alone her cousin asks his best friend Edwin to watch over her.

Edwin has been in love with Clarissa for years, not that he would admit it, or even recognize the emotion. He just knows that she isn't what he wants in a wife, the vivacious and strong willed Clarissa, as much as he cares for her, he thinks would be the wrong kind of wife for him. But when Clarissa's stalker corners her Edwin, before he can stop himself, claims that Clarissa is his fiancee. Clarissa and Edwin decide to play along with the secret engagement until her cousin return but the mad man after Clarissa doesn't play fair and reveals the fake engagement. Clarissa and Edwin are forced to truly become engaged.

Clarissa has secrets her reasons why she never wanted to marry and she is forced to tell Edwin. It turns out Edwin's family has secrets of their own and the mad man threatens to blackmail Edwin with it. Well Edwin is smarter than that, him and Clarissa elope. Through all this Clarissa and Edwin despite having known each other for years really come to understand each other and of course fall deeper in love with each other than they were before.

Overall, the whole story of Edwin and Clarissa was entertaining and very lovely. I can't wait for more.  

ARC REVIEW Enraptured by Candace Camp

I was worried that with this being the last book of the Secrets of the Loch trilogy that I would be completely lost. Thank goodness I wasn't. It centered around Violet Thornehill a new character and Coll Munro, an already established character. I didn't feel like I had missed out on the something in the story, it really felt like it could be a stand alone. The story was delightful, I love that Candace Camp always writes an unconventional female lead; in this case Violet is, basically, an archaeologist. Coll Munro is the the estate manager for Duncally, the property own by his brother-in-law.

At one point in the last book ruins were found and they sent a letter to a known antiquarian. Violet was following in her uncle's footsteps and when he died she need to find a place she could prove that she knew what she was doing. It was just her luck that she found the letter to her uncle about the ruins in Duncally. Everything you need to know about the previous books is explained, with Violet being a new character it makes sense for it to be explained. I enjoyed the humor and the hardheadedness of both characters and the plot was really enjoyable. Regency Indiana Jones but more romance than action, who doesn't like a good old fashioned treasure hunt.

Coll and Violet dance around each other at first, both aware of the attraction but when it becomes clear that the rumors of the lost gold being found puts Violet in danger. Coll goes out of his way to keep her safe even if it means being around her all day; that is when she actually gets around to telling him. As excited as Violet is about uncovering the ruins she knows the danger will not stop until the rumors are proven untrue or the lost gold is finally found. Together Violet and Coll try to solve the mystery and the riddle of where the lost gold was hidden so long ago. The problem with Violet and Coll is that they don't know what's going to happen in the future. Coll has never left Scotland and has no aspirations to leaving Duncally; while Violet wants to continue uncovering ruins wherever it may take her. So while they can they steal moments with each other.

Overall, even as the last book in the series it was completely ok to read as a stand alone and I really liked it. Candace Camp has a way of writing that just makes me happy to read.

He strode over to the receptionist desk, where those
wide navy blue eyes looked seemingly innocent. He was
used to seeing her in scrubs or jeans, so the sexy, black lace
top and flash of bare leg from her skirt threw him off for a
moment. Her usual ponytail had been replaced by curls flying
free over her shoulders. Chestnut waves flopped over
one eye, which looked annoying but damn seductive. Flirty.
Definitely not like the Gen he knew.
He laid both palms flat on the desk and leaned over. “I
think the better question is, what are you doing here?”
She gave a pout. Was she wearing lipstick? He
wouldn’t have pegged her to wear a bold color, but the
rich, coffee-colored lipstick clung to her mouth and
tempted a man to try a sip.
What the hell was he thinking?
“You’re in a mood. I work here now.”
His temper rose another notch. “You’re a doctor. Why
aren’t you at the hospital?”
She shifted in the chair. “I quit.”
He turned. “I’m going to kill the son of a bitch. Wait
here.”
Wolfe earned a few steps before she scrambled and
skid ahead of him, blocking his exit. “Kate already tried
twice. Listen, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you, but it’s for the best.
There was an incident and I realized I won’t be able to
work there.”
“Why didn’t you tell me? I get a text saying you’re
working late, then staying at Kate’s. You refuse to answer
my calls, and when I finally get in touch with Kate, she says
you’re not with her. Crap, Gen, you gave me a heart attack!
I’m stuck at the convention with a bunch of suits and
couldn’t get to you. What incident?”
“A patient thing. I needed some time alone and didn’t
want to bother anyone.”
Wolfe gritted his teeth and prayed for calm. “You’re
not a bother. You’re my friend.”
Her face softened and she grabbed his arms. Her fingers
lay directly over the thin leather that covered his
wrists, but the heat from her touch still burned. “I know.
You have to understand how I’ve been feeling lately. Like
a whiny, pitying, weak female. Suddenly I’m doing all
these crazy things and I broke. I’m better now, but thank
you.”
Her patronizing words made him more enraged. He
still wasn’t sure why. Her self-imposed isolation drove him
nuts, but the thought of her turning to someone else was
much worse. He wanted to shake her until she understood
how important she was. “You’re not better. I refuse to let
that asshole push you out when you were born to be a surgeon.
You can’t work at a matchmaking agency. It’s totally
beneath you.”
The softness disappeared and turned to fire. She practically
growled like a she-cat. “Who the heck are you to
judge me or Kinnections! Did you suddenly turn into a
snob, O playboy-turned-millionaire hotel magnate?”
Wolfe fought the instinctual urge to flush. “Don’t be ridiculous.
I’m just saying you were meant to save lives, not
make matches!”
She sniffed like it was a reasonable argument. “I disagree.
This may be my true calling after all. I’m tired of
stress and medicine and decisions that are life-and-death.
I’m going to have fun. Who knows? Maybe I’ll even find
real love.”
Irritation scraped him like a Brillo pad. “You’ll get
bored of this place in a week.”
She stuck out her tongue. Was she serious? “No, I
won’t. And I’m not quitting till I help make a great match
for someone. I need to be around magic and hope. Hey,
want to sign up? Kate says if I get clients on my own I get a
recruitment bonus.”
He stared at her. “Are you kidding me? No, I’m not
signing up for Kinnections. Listen, I’ll help you get transferred
to another hospital. I can make some calls—I know
some guy in Albany who’s high up the ladder. You can’t
leave your residency when you worked so hard. We’ll fix
this.”
“There’s nothing to fix. This is my job now and you’ll
have to get used to it.” The phone rang and she brightened.
“Gotta get that.”
Wolfe watched her run to the phone and lean over the
desk. The skirt stretched over her full rear, rode up her
thighs, and left her indecent. She wobbled a bit on threeinch
stilettos till she found her balance. For God’s sake, she
never wore heels. Had Kennedy gotten ahold of her? Why
was it so hot in here?
He dragged his fingers through his hair and listened to
her chirp about some upcoming mixer at the Purple Haze.
She gave a low little laugh that sounded suspiciously like a
giggle. Oh yeah. Kennedy had definitely done something
horrible to her. She hung up, wiggled back around, and
tugged down the indecent minuscule fabric that constituted
office wear. Even her perfume was different. The lingering
sweet scent of peach mixed with a sharp citrus and
musk that tantalized. Was she working here to find dates
for herself? No, that wouldn’t be like her at all. She used to
say she needed months to get over a relationship. A broken
engagement would take at least a year.
“Sure you don’t want to help me earn some more
money?” She gave him a wink. “You’d be a hot commodity
with the women.”
Ugh, he refused to be embarrassed. “No. I can get my
own dates.”
“Fine. At least I’ll get something for signing myself up.”
He opened his mouth, then shut it. Opened it again.
“What are you talking about?”
Gen grinned. “I’m going to be a new client of Kinnections!”
“You just broke up with David. You’re always bitching
about people needing months in between serious relationships
in order to heal. Remember that time I broke up with
Allie, and you made me cancel my date the next weekend?
You forced me to be celibate for two whole weeks!”
She rolled her eyes and cocked a hip out. The black top
shifted and he caught a fragment of lace peeking from her
shoulder. Huh? He had it on authority she only wore cotton
underwear. “You needed to suffer. You broke her heart.”
“I did not. She knew up front what the deal was.”
“It’s still wrong. Claiming there’s no strings doesn’t
mean things can’t change. She fell for you, and you walked
away without trying.”
This time he did flush. “I explain to every woman I’m
not interested in long-term—you know that. You always
praised me for being honest and up front.”
“Well, I’m changing my mind. I think it’s crappy. You
need to begin looking at the future. Why don’t we be clients
together? We can double date!”
Wolfe wondered if he had had something bad for
breakfast or if he really wanted to vomit. The image of
them at a dinner table with two strangers was painful. She
was giving him a headache.
“I’m happy the way things are. And I think the last
thing you need is another emotional upheaval with some
guy. Take a break from dating. Maybe you can learn a
hobby. Knitting?”
She glared. “Am I eighty years old? No, I need to get
my feet wet again. David almost broke something in me,
and I want it back.”
Crap. When she put it like that, he’d do anything to
help her. “Sweetheart, don’t you want to find healing within
yourself rather than from outside sources?”
Her eyes widened. “Wow. You’re getting really deep.
Usually, I’d agree with you, but I’m tired of feeling afraid
and unsure. I want to be brave and take a leap into the unknown.
Does that make sense?”
Yeah, it did. He didn’t understand why the thought of
her diving back into dating bothered him so much. Usually
they’d trade war stories and he’d help her get fixed up.
What suddenly changed? Crankiness stirred so he changed
the subject. “Why are you wearing that?”
“Huh? A skirt?”
 “You hate fancy clothes. Did Kennedy try to do something
to you?”
She stared at him like he’d sprouted horns. “You’re acting
really weird, dude. Did you work too hard at the seminar?
How was it?”
“Fine.” He didn’t want to talk about work, or endless
meetings, or sales figures. “I think we should talk more
about this. How about we go to dinner tonight? I’ll pick
you up at seven.”
She crossed her arms in front of her chest. “As long as
you promise not to try and change my mind.”
“I can’t promise you that. But I’ll buy you a burger.”
Gen shook her head. “Fine. I’m easy. See you tonight.”
He watched her walk back to the desk and slide into
the chair, crossing her legs. The smooth expanse of white
skin blinded him for a moment. She always joked about
not having a drop of her Italian blood heritage since she
burned so easily and never tanned. But there was something
about all that gorgeous naked flesh, soft and pure,
that made his fingers curl to touch her.
Wolfe turned his back on her and his startling thoughts.
He needed a cold shower and a nap. Lately he was beginning
to wonder if the past three months of celibacy had
been such a smart move. The break seemed like a good
idea. He’d been tired of the delicate game of seduction
lately, and how fast his partners seemed to get attached. Almost
like they looked at him as a challenge to break down.
If only they’d realize there was nothing inside that
hadn’t already been broken.
Still, sex might take the edge off. The last thing he
needed was lustful thoughts over his best friend. She was
the only healthy relationship with a female he’d ever been
able to maintain. He refused to screw up the best thing that
ever happened to him due to a surge of testosterone.
Wolfe made the drive back to his place in Manhattan.
His penthouse apartment had tons of security, luxury, and
every amenity he could think of. The parquet floors and
high ceilings were elegant, but his furnishings were spartan
and masculine. Dark wood, glass, extensive computers and
media, and bare walls. He barely slept here, finding it more
convenient to stay at Purity, where he kept a tight rein on
things.
Wolfe took a quick shower, changed, and put on a pot
of coffee. Maybe he’d relax, watch a baseball game on television,
then get some more work done. All in all, it had
been a tough couple of days and he needed a break. Dinner
with Gen would put him in a better mood. They’d get
back to their usual buddy routine, and he’d begin working
on finding a new sex companion who had nothing to do
with Kinnections.
When the doorman buzzed and said a uniformed officer
needed to see him, Wolfe got a bad feeling.
He was handed the temporary restraining order on behalf
of a Dr. David Riscetti, who accused him of harassment
and a host of other sins.
His bad feeling was right on. As usual.
He glanced through the papers. Wolfe had to give the
son of a bitch credit. He was playing a chess game, and he
was a great player. Wolfe cared less about himself, as long
as David stayed away from Gen. Unfortunately, his spidey
senses were tingling again, as if he was missing a piece in
an elaborate puzzle being put together.
Yeah. All in all, it was a shitty day.
