Oh My God this book! This book was like reading the pilot episode of an awesome new superhero series. (theme song Unknown Brain - Superhero or Simon Curtis - Superhero) The Solstice Syndrome is a wasting disease, where the body runs hot and the fever burns through the body's water, you basically die of fever and dehydration. Tess is prepared to die, she knows it's soon because for some fucked up reason her case progressed faster than most. On the night of the freak meteor shower Tess checks herself out of the hospital if she was going to die it was going to be on her terms and since she alienated herself from her family she's alone and wants to see the meteor shower. But something happens and Tess doesn't die that night, suddenly she's cured. With nothing else she decides to go back to her hometown and makes nice with her sister who had the bad fortune to marry an abusive loser. 

Once Tess is back home she discovers there have been disappearances, young woman about her age have been going missing and rumors about the white slave market going on. She also discovers there is a weird side effect to the Solstice Syndrome. Tess' can absorb different materials and change her hands into that material. Tess then discovers that her hometown has it's own vigilante and the only way this guy could move like that is if he was like her, they aren't only ones people have been popping up all over the globe with superpowers and acting the part too. Tess becomes obsessed with the vigilante known as The Fox. Tess steps up her game when her sister goes missing and she's determined to find her no matter what to the point she joins forces with The Fox to rescue her sister and stop the white slavery ring.

I love Tess! oh boy do I really love that geeky, awkward, artistic Tess, and the fact that she becomes best friends with a trekkie is a big bonus. Reed, oh heart throb, what is there that I don't like about him? Nothing he borders on perfect. Was I the only one freaked out that her home town was called Weyland? I just kept thinking androids, I mean synthetic humans, were going to pop up somewhere, 'cause you know Weyland/Yutani from Aliens.... anyways. I would love to see the stories of other Solstice Survivors, if there is going to be a full series, but if it stays with Tess and The Fox that's awesome too. It's kind of like Kickass, except with real superpowers. Overall, this book was a very big win for me, I absolutely loved it, everything about it.

Exclusive Excerpt:

I felt someone’s eyes on me but ignored them. I knew what I looked like. I knew how my hazel eyes had started to look too big for their sockets and how my swollen joints looked wildly out of proportion with my thin limbs. I snuggled into the blankets and pulled out my sketch pad, drawing the people around me to keep my fingers warm. In front of me, a short woman with poofy red curls was digging around in a picnic basket, handing sandwiches to the two small children who sat beside her. To my right, a middle-aged guy with glasses was cringing as he tried to pop the cork on a champagne bottle. I flinched when he finally succeeded. The cork shot off into the trees, and the people around him laughed nervously, probably as happy as I was that they hadn’t lost an eye. 

A lump formed in my throat, and I gripped my pencil tighter as I sketched. Everyone here had a future. They had something to look forward to tomorrow… and the day after that. Once the meteor shower was over, they’d go home to warm kitchens and cups of hot cocoa and talk about how perfect and beautiful the night had been. 

And I… well, I’d be here until someone found me, I supposed. 

The sky above us was rapidly darkening. Millions of stars shone, and everyone in the clearing stared upward, waiting for the show to begin. 

The universe did not disappoint. 

Sometime around midnight, a streak of light appeared above me. I gasped as it bolted partway across my field of vision before vanishing. A few minutes later, another appeared. Then another. It was unlike any meteor shower I’d ever seen, and from the gasps and oohs around me, I could tell I wasn’t alone in my awe.  

I tasted salt. When did I start crying? 

The cold seeped through my jacket and Davies’ blanket, stinging my skin, but it didn’t bother me. My tears could freeze right on my face for all I cared. I could melt into the ground beneath me and not even feel it. There was no looking away; I was riveted by the magic above me. 

Three lights appeared in the sky at once. They were much brighter than the streaks that had preceded them, and they tore through the stars like soldiers rushing into battle. My eyes went wide. I knew it had to be an optical illusion, but they appeared to be coming right at me. 

As the meteors sped toward the clearing, a rushing sound filled my ears, growing louder with each breath. A wave of nausea hit me, and I realized I was about to pass out. It’d been happening a lot lately. The edges of my vision fuzzed into blackness, but the cluster of meteors shone in the center, still appearing to speed directly at me.
 This is it, I thought. 

This was no ordinary fainting spell. It was different; I could feel it. The skin from the top of my head down to the soles of my feet began to tingle and burn, and my heart pounded in my ears. 

These were my last moments. 

A face, so much like my own, swam in front of my eyes. My sister smiled at me, but her eyes were filled with sadness. 

“Goodbye, Bethany,” I whispered.  

And the world went dark.

Let’s get this over quickly, shall we? I have dozens of emails, a conference call at Noon, and a lovely blonde waiting for me to return on a lunch break.

I’m Dante’s best friend, partner, and basic wingman. If you read the book, you’ll see I have a small role, but it’s important. Without me, Dante has no cover. I’m the name behind the huge conglomerate of Inferno Enterprises. I buy up property all over NYC and either sell it for a higher price, break it up for my own interest, or transform it. Because of Dante’s little time travel problem, he can’t be out in the public view, so I take the hit. Of course, I get a cushy office with a great view, all the power I’ve ever craved, and the trust of a man who saved my sister and treats me like the brother he never had.

Basically, I’d do anything for the guy. But you’ll piss me the hell off if you call it a bromance. I fucking hate that term.

Back to me. I was the one who encouraged him to go after Selina. I like control in all forms. There’s not a woman out there I havent’ been able to seduce or tame,and it has nothing to do with ego but just plain fact. I adore women. Their scent, their arousal, their skin. The way they moan in passion, and are able to have multiple orgasms. I’m addicted to them, and sex, and never apologize for it.

My nightmare? Getting trapped. Settling down with one woman. Not gonna happen in this lifetime. And there’s never been a woman to push past my boundaries to make me want more than a few nights.

I also don’t do “good” girls. They’re a mess, high maintenance, and a bomb ready to explode. They want emotion and promises of security. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not the type to just want to screw and leave. I enjoy stripping a woman’s walls down, giving them excruciating pleasure, and making a connection.

As long as it’s just for the night.

I have a feeling my story is coming next, and I’m a bit wary. Something about Dante’s suprise half sister is making me uneasy.

I’ll just have to wait and see.
