ARC REVIEW Set the Night on Fire by Laura Trentham

Set the Night on Fire: A Cottonbloom NovelCottonbloom #6, We continue with the Abbott brothers. Jackson and Willa eloped got married by way the Justice of the Peace and Sutton and Wyatt are planning a huge wedding, well Sutton's mom is at least. Ford followed through on his threat to sell his share and Mrs. Ella Boudreaux bought it. The announcement that she was now part owner of Abbott Brother's Garage and Restoration didn't go quite as smoothly as she had hoped the fact that it was used to hurt the Abbott brothers didn't sit right with her, Ford told her it was what was best for the garage and yet the other brother's treated her like the plague. Ella wants to be part of the garage she wants to help to finally be part of something; Wyatt and Jackson are more open to her than Mack but then again Mack is not only fighting the fact that she now own part of the shop he's fighting his own attraction to her.

There is more to Ella than meets the eye and the more time Ella spends at the shop the more Mack realizes she can help and the more he realizes she's far more than she seems. The chemistry between Ella and Mack is great, you can see it bubbling just beneath the surface and by the time they give in the sexual tension is just overflowing. I loved all the little complications that came up and how they were handled. Mack really did grow, he had quite a bit of character development and it was all for the better he was able to let go of the anger. Ella really didn't change but she was finally able to become who she wanted to be and in doing so she was able to stand up to her ex and let go the hurt and help his current wife leave him. There are so many other characters I want to see get their own books and I'm over here speculating who could be paired with who, very excited for the upcoming books. Overall it was another great read.

ARC REVIEW Paradox by Catherine Coulter

Paradox (FBI Thriller #22)FBI Thriller #22, One of the on going series I love. Savich and Sherlock are two of my favorite characters. In the past these books were more Romantic Suspense but now the romance has pulled back and let the suspense/thriller aspect take precedence, which is fine because she's really good at that. Once again we deal with two distinct storylines working in tandem. Savich gets called down to a quiet little town in Maryland when the Chief of Police, Ty Christie, witness a murder out on the lake in the early morning hours and the rowboat that the murder was committed on was rented out to a friend and fellow FBI, Special Agent Sala Porto. In the search for the murder victim they also uncover bones that have been at the bottom of the lake for years. Savich and Sherlock discover that an old enemy connects them to the murdered woman in Maryland, while they deal with tracking this insane person Sala and Ty try to figure the origin of the bones.

I really did enjoy this one the going back and forth between the stories and the characters it flowed pretty easily. Both stories were exciting, intriguing, and really good reading. I love Catherine Coulter's writing style, I wouldn't have read all 22 books in the series if I didn't, the characters are easy to connect with and empathize with Sala and Ty have the start of a romance but it is not the main focus of the story. I hope we can see more of Leigh "Gunny" in the future she was a special character I liked her. Overall this was a great read, out Coulter's recent books in the series this is a favorite.

The richest bachelor in England plays matchmaker…for an heiress he wants for himself!

For beautiful, witty Lavinia Gray, there’s only one thing worse than having to ask the appalling Parth Sterling to marry her: being turned down by him.

Now the richest bachelor in England, Parth is not about to marry a woman as reckless and fashion-obsessed as Lavinia; he’s chosen a far more suitable bride.

But when he learns of Lavinia’s desperate circumstances, he offers to find her a husband. Even better, he’ll find her a prince.

As usual, there’s no problem Parth can’t fix. But the more time he spends with the beguiling Lavinia, the more he finds himself wondering…

Why does the woman who’s completely wrong feel so right in his arms?

Gentlemen didn’t kiss like this. And yet he couldn’t stop . . .
She tasted better than anything—anyone. She tasted like honey and spice, like brandy and excitement.
Dimly, he was aware that blood was thundering through his veins . . . from a mere kiss.
The reality of it shocked him back into sense and he pulled back, ending the kiss. Lavinia opened her eyes. Annoyed. She was annoyed. Years of reading her face told him exactly how she was feeling.
“Kiss me again, Mr. Sterling,” she ordered, her voice husky. For a moment he just felt a flare of anger at that formal address, but she tugged at his hair.

He dove back into the kiss as if it had never ended.

Parth may not be a Wilde by birth but in every other way he is, he's a self made man and one of the richest in the country. Lavinia is beautiful and intelligent and is one of the most sot after heiress in London and Paris. After Lavinia discovers her what her mother has done to prevent the ruination of the family Lavinia asks Parth to marry her, unfortunately after she's given him some nicknames like Perfect Parth and Appalling Parth he wasn't very inclined to marry her. Even after Lavinia broke down and explained why Parth merely agreed to help her find a suitable gentleman. Parth has another woman he has his sights set on to be his wife a widowed contessa from Italy. But after what transpired between Lavinia and Parth he can't seem to get Lavinia off his mind and matchmaking, sheesh, it wasn't as easy as he thought it would be, in his mind not even a Norwegian Prince is good enough for her.

The antics of Parth and Lavinia as the circle each other both having feelings for the other but to scared to admit it was quite amusing. As always Eloisa James' active setting is outstanding, from the scenery of the bog to the streets of London she transports you back in time especially with her descriptions of the dresses and such, it's just wow, it feeds the imagination. I love all the quirky characters, Lady Knowe is probably my favorite. Parth and Lavinia I knew as soon as I read their introduction to each other in Wilde in Love, I knew they were perfect for each other I was right they are and this book was their perfect HEA.

ARC REVIEW The Singular Mr. Sinclair by Mia Marlowe

The Singular Mr. Sinclair (The House of Lovell, #1)The House of Lovell #1, Start of a new series the House of Lovell centers on the Lovell family and it's five boys and one daughter. Caroline is no shrinking violet she very headstrong and independent and on her third year on the marriage mart and no matter how hard her mother tries Caroline doesn't want to marry. She only has to wait out this year's season and after her next birthday she is due to inherit a large sum in which she wants to use to travel the world. Lawrence Sinclair hasn't been home to England since he was a boy, he was sent of to boarding school and then forced to join the army. As an orphan he has been at the mercy of his uncle, Lord Ware, who Lawrence is convinced is trying to kill him even though for for all intents and purposes Lawrence is his heir. But Lawrence survived the harsh boarding school and the War; after he sold out his commission he traipsed across the continent there he met Edward Lovell, Lord Bredon, the eldest Lovell child. Bredon manages to talk Lawrence into coming home to England with him that's when he meets Caroline.

It was love at first sight, Lawrence had never seen a more beautiful woman than Miss Lovell and she didn't make fun of his rusty social skills she just gave him a smile and a way to escape from the awkward social situation. Caroline decided that she was going to spend the season flirting with Mr. Sinclair, heir or not she knew her parents wouldn't find him acceptable and if other men thought he was courting her they wouldn't bother her. But the more time she spends with Mr. Sinclair the more fascinated she becomes with him; he manages to push all her buttons good and bad. Lawrence is certain he could never love another woman the way he loves Caroline but he's not so certain if he's the best man for her, if he can give her the life she so longs for. Caroline once she realizes the depth of her feelings for Lawrence the more determined she is to never let him go.

Overall, this really was an outstanding story. I loved the little bit of conflict that came up I was expecting a little more from it and it was solved a little too easily but all in all the romance between Caroline and Lawrence was what really won me over. The secondary characters from all her brothers too her two ditzy friends, even Horatia who gets kind of obnoxious, make the story even more enjoyable especially the hinting at future connections and books. I have only read a few Mia Marlowe books but I do enjoy them she has a great narrative, this is my favorite of her so far and I look forward to reading the rest of this series.

ARC REVIEW Shifters of SoHo books 4-6 by J.S. Striker

Shifters of SoHo part 2,

Dean
was previously published and reviewed.

Oscar
: Oscar is the heir apparent for Merland one of the many worlds that connects to Earth through paintings. Merland has been preparing for war there have been an increasing amount of rumors and merman from the outlying ocean being attacked. Oscar, his father, and their General, Rigby, have been upgrading the weapons and other protections preparing for when the attack will finally come. Lili Maldives loves living in SoHo, she is a librarian and caretaker for a privately own library/ art gallery but her boss is an idiot who only cares about the adjacent coffee house. The newly acquired painting was a gift from a Russian painter who before he retired gave away three of his paintings. Lili while determining whether she needed to sell it of keep it was pulled into the painting. Oscar was attacked, it was an attempted assassination and he managed to escape into the closest room available the art gallery but in his haste he ran into one of his uncles paintings of another world and accidentally pulled someone to his side. Lili takes everything in stride she's amazingly calm about discovering there is another world or there full of mermaids. For Oscar's protection and to find his potential mate they travel to SoHo. After a while with no luck Oscar asks Lili if she will pretend to be his mate and after offering her a pretty hefty sum she agrees. Once they get to Merland pretending to be in love is the easy part (mainly because they kind of already do love each other) because soon after the kingdom is surrounded by their previously unknown enemy and the war begins.

At first I was a little disappointed because it mainly took place in Merland and none of the other series characters showed up, then it's all good I liked the way they were brought in. Overall, it was a very exciting story with a good amount of humor and Oscar and Lili are pretty hot.

Rigby: Rigby use to be the General but during the attack on Merland he lost his leg. He still want to be useful so the newly crowned King, and friend, Oscar tasks him with the job of finding the other two painting his uncle painted that are also gateways into Merland before someone finds out what they are. Kitty Waterson is having the worst day ever. She gets fired from her job and her brother is getting married and wants her to move out of their shared apartment. With nowhere else to go she contacts her best friend Lili and asks about her empty apartment. Lili responds right away saying another friend is already staying there and if she doesn't mind sharing the place with him she's welcome to stay.  Kitty and Rigby don't get along at first but when Kitty get suspicious about what it is that Rigby is doing she follows him and watches him break into a house and she follows him into the house and into the wine cellar and proceeds to lock them inside, accidentally of course. When they hear someone upstairs she stumbles and falls into the painting, Rigby has no choice but to after her. Kitty almost drowns but before she does Rigby is there his mouth over her giving her air. Well the cat's out off the bag Kitty knows and Lili comes back to SoHo to explain everything. Because it was all Kitty's fault that she messed up the first recovery of the painting she promises to help Rigby get them. The first one is easy it's the second one that takes them on the adventure. First through the marketplace and then the countryside full of vampire gypsies, sirens, river monster, and mountain goblins.

Overall it was a good story, full of adventure and excitement. Kitty and Rigby have a strong attraction with enough differences to keep it interesting. There are a few hopefuls for characters to get their own story that I want to see. All in all it's good boxed set.

ARC REVIEW I Think I love You by Lauren Layne

I Think I Love You (Oxford, #5)Oxford #5 Okay this is the last Oxford novel and I know I've said that before but I mean it this time. The final couple finally realizes their potential. Brit Robbins is tired of being every guys friend, her latest break up with a loser momma's boy was a real eye opener. Hunter Cross couldn't ask for a better friend than Brit but when she asks him to give her lesson on how to seduce a guy she just may be pushing the limit. He hesitantly agrees because it's better if comes from him, right? Hunter almost immediately starts to doubt the logic in the plan especially when he start to have thoughts about Brit that he's never had before and suddenly the thought of her doing any of this for another guy makes him feel jealous. Brit is learning a bunch from Hunter she's also learned she loves her best friend, when their fake dating leads to a practice kiss they are both taken by surprise at how strongly they want each other. But love is never easy in Lauren Layne's world and insecurities and family emergencies threaten to get in the way of their HEA, mostly it's Hunter's hardheadedness.

Once again LL makes a perfect couple with humor and romance combined and some really sexy scenes. I really loved it, their friend to lovers romance was believable because I think it was always there, everyone else saw it but because neither Brit and Hunter went ready to see each other as anything but friends they couldn't see the love and the passion that could be there until they looked for it. The hardest part of that was not only them accepting it but admitting it to themselves. This was a bittersweet end and yes it's really the end this time there is a really nice tear jerking farewell at the end.

ARC REVIEW Strength Enduring by Carrie Ann Ryan

Strength Enduring (Talon Pack, #8)Talon Pack #8, The second to last in this story arc against this Big Bad and his illusions of grandeur. Kam Brentwood the Enforcer for the Talon pack, is the strongest only second to the Alpha and emotionally tied to everyone in the pack like the Omega only not as strong. Kam also knows that his is one of the worse positions to be in for a mate and family, all to often he's seen what can happen to loved ones when your enemies want to hurt you. That's why no matter how much he wants to he can't claim the one woman who can calm his soul.

Dhanielle Coburn has always had a way of knowing things she knew something bad was going to happen when she woke up the morning the principal fired her just like she knew she needed to be in Talon Pack territory right after that and just like she knows Kam is her mate. But Dhani's ability to know things isn't just some simple gut reaction there is a bigger mystery in Dhani's familial history.

Dhani knows she belongs in the Talon Pack with Kam she finally feels like she finally belongs. Kam and Dhani decide to take it slow and wait until the Big Bad is dealt with before they move forward if they even want to, but the Big Bad takes the decision out of their hands when he focus' his attention on Dhani and the only way to protect her is for Kam to mate her.

As always Carrie Ann Ryan is freakin' brilliant. This is an ongoing series so if you are new to the wonderful world of Carrie Ann Ryan you really should start at the beginning. There is this great internal struggle Kam deals with the first part of the book that's angsty and brooding and Dhani starts out having the worst luck that gets worse before it gets better. These books just keep getting better and better and you never know where Ms. Ryan is going to take the story next.

ARC REVIEW Scandal Above Stairs by Jennifer Ashley

Scandal Above Stairs (Kat Holloway Mysteries, #2)A Below Stairs Mystery #2 or A Kat Holloway Mystery either works. I love everything about this book and the series so far. I love the the main character, Kat Holloway, is the head chef of the household, her new assistant, Tess, who use to be a tea leaf, the closest thing Kat has to a best friend is her employers sister-in-law, Lady Cynthia, who likes to dress in men's clothing and another good friend, Elgin Thanos, who is a variable genius, socially awkward, and is oblivious to the division of class. Let us not forget the man in her life, the mysterious Daniel McAdams, who has been missing for the last couple of months doing who knows what and his son, James.

The story on this one isn't as massive as the conspiracy in the first book but this mystery is just as twisty and turny and even better we find out more about Daniel's mysterious past. When Lady Cynthia comes to Kat asking for help, Kat's curious nature and her sort-of-friendship with Lady Cynthia lead her into a complicated theft-ring. One of Cynthia's dear friends is being accused by her husband of stealing painting but it turns out to be a little more complicated than that especially when it comes to light that several collectors have had pieces go missing as well. It turns deadly when a body is found and Daniel is thought to be the murderer.
Overall, this book had me enthralled from beginning to end. It has fantastic characters a plot that had me guessing the whole time. Thanos and Cynthia are some of the most entertaining secondary characters I've ever read, they have a bit of comic relief that helps break the tension ever so often. I love this book and Kat Holloway I can't wait for more.

(Immortal Guardians #8)

Publication: July 10th 2018 by Dianne Duvall

Return to the "utterly addictive" (RT Book Reviews), "fast-paced and humorous" (Publishers Weekly) world of New York Times bestselling author Dianne Duvall's Immortal Guardians.

He awakens encapsulated in dirt with no knowledge of how he came to be there. Riddled with injuries, he can remember neither his past nor who he is. Nor can he remember what he is. But surely no mortal man could survive being buried deep beneath the earth. All he knows with certainty is that the soothing voice and presence of the woman moving around above enables him to endure the agony of his wounds. And he will do whatever it takes to be with her.

When Susan first sees the old two-story house for sale, such warmth and longing fill her that—against all reason—she makes an offer. It will take years of hard work and money she frankly doesn’t have to fix up the place. So she can’t explain why she bought it. She also can’t explain what compels her to spend hours one night, digging in the basement until she unearths a man. A man who still lives and breathes despite having been buried alive. A man whose intense brown eyes glow amber with pain, declaring him far more than ordinary. Susan knows she should keep her distance. He has no memory and possesses gifts that would make most fear him. But as the two work together to unravel the mystery of his past, she finds herself drawn in by his teasing nature and tender touch. So much so that she loses her heart to him even as they find themselves hunted by unknown enemies who are ruthless in their quest to capture them.

ARC REVIEW The Highlander's Promise by Lynsay Sands

The Highlander's Promise (Highland Brides #6)Highland Brides#6, First of this series I have read and it can be safely as a standalone but after reading this one I really want to read the others. I really loved this one, but then it is Lynsay Sands I haven't found a book by her that I didn't like. Her dialogue is witty and her active setting is great, her descriptive narration really pulls you into the story. I loved that it was love at first sight for both Aulay and Jetta, and it's so sweet that Aulay tries to keep his hands to himself. I loved the little things that made this book quirky, like how just about everyone would curse Aulay's ex-fiancee under their breathe whenever she was mentioned.

Aulay is the head of the clan and has plenty of responsibilities but every now and then he likes to escape to the hunting lodge near the beach to go fishing and just be alone it's usually around the anniversary of his brother's death also when he received the horrendous scar on his face where someone tried to cleave him into two and missed. This time around his younger brother, Alick, tags along to drive him crazy it's a good thing he came along like he did because they find a woman tied to a broken off mast floating in the ocean. She woke up long enough to call Aulay an angel and that she's scared of her family and that someone tried to kill her. When she wakes up with amnesia Aulay and his brother, Rory the doctor, agree not to correct her when she assumes Aulay is her husband. Rory things it best if the memories come natural and not forced because when ever she tries she gives herself a headache and fants. Aulay calls her Jetta for her jet black hair. Aulay likes Jetta not only is she beautiful but she doesn't find his scarred face ugly. She doesn't grimace and look away when every they are together she actually likes it, says it gives him character that alone has won her over in the hearts of the clan and especially Aulay's siblings. Finding out who Jetta is is more dangerous than they thought when several attempts on her life have been made. The only way they can think to protect her is for Aulay to really marry her and give her the protection of the clan, if they can only figure out who is trying to kill her.

Overall, aside from being a little predictable I loved it.

ARC REVIEW DC Universe DARK NIGHTS: METAL

Dark Days

The Road to Metal

Dark Days: The Road to MetalThe prequel to the Dark Nights: Metal series is short. Unless you buy the 256 paged hardcover or Kindle copy then it's still short you just have a bunch of other comics that they used as a road to this road; unfortunately the digital advanced readers copy was just that. Since I haven't read Final Crisis all the individual, taken from the middle and the end of other series had me completely lost, I can't do that jump into a story part way and only a small part drives me nuts so I skipped all that. The four issues that are Road to Metal were well done I enjoyed the story and the art but it was a short tease and that was really short and that a bit of a disappointment. I saw how many pages were in it and I got all excited and then to find out it was less than half that size, no bueno.

Dark Nights:

Metal:

Dark Nights: MetalThe main book of the series, it's the main storyline. To me it felt like the whole story was missing something, like only part of the story was there, and it was. I enjoyed the story I loved how complex it seemed to be how Scott Snyder tied in past events to all converge into this one massive story the only problem is that it feels like it's a truncated version of itself. It feels like it should be bigger and longer and the ending really wrapped up fast, it made me pause and think, "Really that's it?" I did love the art, Greg Capullo does not disappoint.
Kendra explains that the Court of Owls has been manipulating the whole thing and Barbatos has been behind them from the beginning, the beginning of time basically, to get Batman to do exactly what they want him to do. Batman, nonetheless, feels like he's the only one that can handle the upcoming evil and then he disappears, assumed dead and Superman is the only one that knows he still alive and needs the help from the Justice League to get him into the Dark multiverse to save Batman.  I've never been a fan of Kendra or Carter and I was just underwhelmed with their part in the story.
This by itself is good, it's even better if you read the tie-ins.

Dark Nights: Metal:

The Resistance

Dark Nights: Metal: The Resistance (Dark Nights: Metal (2017-))
THE FLASH #33, HAL JORDAN AND THE GREEN LANTERN CORPS #32, JUSTICE LEAGUE #32-33, HAWKMAN: FOUND #1, TEEN TITANS #12, NIGHTWING #29, SUICIDE SQUAD #26, GREEN ARROW #32, BATMAN: LOST #1 and HAWKMAN FOUND #1
These are tie-in stories and for me reading them after Metal made the overall story better. It filled in blanks of what happened during the main story and just made the whole chain of events seem more inevitably doomed. I really enjoyed the Gotham Resistance. Nightwing, Green Arrow, Robin, Harley, and Killer Croc work together to get the the center of the labyrinth that Gotham City has become fighting Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, The Riddler and so on. The Justice League storyline follows them on their own adventures while helping Superman get to the Darkverse and what happened after that, where Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman, Cyborg, and The Green Lantern basically are faced with the corrupted Batmen that share their power. The main villain in this isn't really Barbatos but the Batman who Laughs. He's out in Gotham manipulating all the other villains and making life hell for everyone. I enjoyed the art pretty much throughout the entire thing and the story lines were. My main complaint is that with everything out of order it was kind of confusing.

Dark Nights: Metal

Dark Knights Rising

(or the Nightmare Batmen depending on which one you get)

Dark Nights: Metal: Dark Knights RisingAnother tie-in for the Metal series this one filling in the blanks where the Nightmare Batmen come in. I really enjoyed all the different stories, all the different ways Batman was corrupted.
The Red Death: a thief who stole his reality's Speed Force power. He used The Flash to control the Speed Force and is now merged with The Flash.
The Drowned: a female, amphibious Batman. The Atlantis of her multiverse devastated her world so she changed herself so she could defeat them all.
The Dawnbreaker: a twisted Green Lantern. As a child after the death of his parents the ring came to him but too angry at the world he corrupted the ring making it something very dark.
The Murder Machine: a deranged, deadly cyborg. The death of Alfred has Batman start the Alfred protocol but the Alfred AI didn't quite come out the way it was intended.
The Merciless: a warrior who wears the helmet of Ares. Batman and Diana were in love but in a war against Ares she falls Batman beats Ares and takes his helm and all his Godly powers
The Devastator: a part-human, part-Doomsday monster. Superman went bad and only by becoming part Doomsday is Batman able to save his world and defeat Superman.
And  lastly The Batman Who Laughs: a lunatic driven mad by his world's Joker. The Joker is dead but Batman is poisoned and corrupted by the Joker last laugh. Overall I really enjoyed all the storylines I enjoyed Batman becoming the things he feared most. The art was hit and miss for me but it was more good than bad. I absolutely loved The Batman Who Laughs his character through the whole Metal series is one of my favorites.

The series overall I enjoyed but I wouldn't buy it unless the series was all in one big omnibus in order.
