ARC REVIEW The Pandora Room by Christopher Golden

The Pandora Room Ben Walker #2, Walker is back for another adventure. I think this can be read as a standalone since they are two separate stories but for the two returning characters a bit of character development happened in the first book; you can always go back and read the first book if you feel the need to after reading this one. I enjoy Golden's writing, for me this one was quite a bit more enjoyable to read than the first, topic-wise I have always been more interested in Pandora's Box than the arc, viruses and creepy ass ghost are more my thing.

Archaeologist Sophie Durand was leading a dig site of an underground city in the Northern Iraqi/Kurdistan area when she discovers what she thinks is Pandora's Box. Kim Seong gets called in by the UN to oversee and decide who gets custody of the item. To help her out she asks specifically for Ben Walker. Walker is use to handling stuff for the government making sure old artifacts and such end up in the right hands. But what happens no one expects. The local jihadi view this discovery as a threat to their history and religion and lead an attack at the dig site. Top side the American and Kurdish soldier are fighting to keep the jihadi from making it down into the underground city and destroying everything; while down below the scientist, researchers, and laborers are facing a horrible virus and pretty soon they are trapped there with no way out.

Overall, great read. I did tear up at one point toward the end it was one of those moments where you want to throw the book across the room, curse the author and then go right back to reading it because you have to find out what happens next. This book was creepy, morbid, and a little grotesque a few times and I loved it. I loved the characters, as large of a cast that he had it was easy to follow, each time the narrative changed perspectives he named the person it switched to within the first sentence. There were some unanswered questions at the end, so I am hoping another book comes soon and answers them, well not too soon you can tell Golden does research his stuff first and that takes time but it so worth it.

ARC REVIEW The Trouble with Cowboys by Victoria James

The Trouble with CowboysWishing River, Montana a small podunk of a town Ty wasn't enthusiastic about returning home in fact most of the town wasn't happy to see his return either. Ty left one night eight years ago after a fight with his father, no one else knows what went on that night they just know that Ty left without saying goodbye to any one and because it's easy to blame someone who can't defend themselves Ty was made to look like the bad guy especially when the ranch started to fail. Lainey Sullivan wants more to life than just running the dinner but everytime she gets the opportunity to go to the art school in Paris something happens that prevents her from going.

The romance is a slow build and isn't explicit. I liked the romance between Lainey and Ty, I also liked Ty's best friends and the way the story developed with both Lainey and Ty working toward something. Lainey trying to go to art school and Ty trying to prove to everyone especially Lainey that he's going to stay for good. The writing was nice and it has a good narrative and such a sweet ending. Overall, it was a good read.

ARC REVIEW A Lady's Virtue be A.S. Fenichel

A Lady's Virtue (Everton Domestic Society, #3)The Everton Domestic Society #3, Out of all the Historical Romances I've read this month this one has to be my favorite. I have been waiting on Anthony's book since he first appeared in the Forever Brides series, and it was worth it. Sylvia Dowder was "disgraced" when her fiance called off the wedding after he inherited and became a Viscount. Seeing that she would probably never make a suitable match again she joined the Everton Domestic Society.

What I love about the Ladies at Everton is that they have embraced their spinsterhood and are doing something about it that they want. With Sylvia it's not only just being an Everton Lady, she's also in secret a gossip columnist, who rights the wrongs, who looks out for the underdog and if someone is treated horribly she points out all the faults in the accuser. Writing is what Sylvia really loves and being an Everton Lady gives her the time and the means to keep doing so.

Anthony Braighton was born and raised in America, moving to England was more for his mother and his sister and after several years he inherited a title he didn't want, it just got in the way of his plans to eventually move to Italy and make wine. When Anthony's mother starts bugging him about marriage he hires and Everton Lady to play his hostess and to redecorate his newly acquired townhouse just to prove to his mother he doesn't need to get married but meeting Sylvia again changed everything. Now Anthony doesn't want to do anything without her and if that means staying in England then he's willing too. After what happened to her last engagement Sylvia is prejudice against men with titles and Anthony finds himself trying to prove to her he's not going to hurt her. Sylvia spends the whole time trying to talk herself out of loving Anthony.

Overall, it's a good read. Sylvia can be headstrong and very stubborn when it comes to admitting her true feelings but I understand where she's coming from and why she's scared to commit to something like that again. Anthony is a great character I'm glad he finally got his HEA. I love A.S. Finichel's writing is heartfelt and witty great character development and each book can be read as a standalone.

Oh my flippin' Gods!! This book! Mimi has done it again taken us on a wild ride, between Colel and her crazy ninja assassin bees and Minky. Woooo this book is crazy good, emphasis on the crazy.
Colel has been the Mistress of the Bees since her creation 70-ish thousand years ago and after all that time she's lonely but looking for love when you wear a beehive for a hat isn't easy especially when your bees are very protective. Rys is the one human who has ever sparked a lustful emotion out of Colel but everytime she gets near him her bees freak out and considering the fact he's deathly allergic to bees has her all twisted inside. Meanwhile Zac is dealing with his own romance problems, Minky has gone off her rocker and Cimil well.... it's better if you just read it.

Overall these crazy gods and goddess make for some good laugh out loud fun reading. Mimi has a way with words especially when she's channeling Cimil. Told in third person mainly from over the shoulder of Colel and sometimes Rys and Zac. I love the direction Mimi is taking this, she keeps you guessing. This is a standalone Colel and Rys story begins and ends only Zac and Tula's ongoing tragedy is well.. ongoing, but there is a nice little tease as to what's going on next.

Book Blurb:

The second stand-alone romantic suspense in the Triggerman Inc. series featuring sexy assassins, a baby, and a devious bad guy from New York Times bestseller Marie Harte. An assassin with a baby? Inconceivable...

Deacon's life could be better. Deacon--the Shadow--kills people for a living. He's a choosy assassin, and he makes no bones about his life choices. But a baby...

That's something he knows he'd never conceive of--pun intended. While he's looking into this baby situation, snarky ex-supermodel Solene Hansen is in trouble. Deacon's sticking to her 24/7. Before long, he's learning that there's a lot more to Solene than sharp words and a gorgeous face. But his enemies are close, and they've taken note of his interest..

It'll take all his talent to keep Solene safe, learn who wants him dead and what the baby has to do with any of it, and figure out how to get Solene to realize that while he might not be a safe bet, he'll be a sure one.

Add the book to Goodreads

Book two of this awesome series is just as good as the first and works as a standalone. Deacon and Solene are a perfect match both from different backgrounds but very similar in how they are emotionally. Deacon 's the ladies man and never allowed anyone close. Solene learned her lesson the hard way and keeps people as far away as possible, so far only Addy her best friend has been able to get close. But there is something about Deacon, she feels safe around him and Deacon's never felt this way about another woman, he feels relaxed and comfortable with her; with her he drops his guard and lets her in. He knows there is more to her than just her sexy figure and gorgeous face.
There is still the big mystery of who is out to get them and who the baby's parents really are?

Overall, another outstanding book. Deacon and Solene have a great chemistry and they are very, very sexy together and their dialogue is so funny at times. I love all the action very suspenseful. Great writing and great character development I can't wait for Hammer's book next.

PURCHASE THE PREVIOUS BOOK IN THE SERIES

Noel "Ice" Cavanaugh's method is foolproof. Get in, do the job, get out, melt away without a trace. Neat. Tidy. No mistakes.

This time, though, something isn't right. Two somethings. First, a random attack that feels not-so-random. Then he discovers a baby on his doorstep with a note claiming it's his. Unfortunately, the sexy neighbor who found the boy first has too many questions in her eyes to ignore.

When her handsome, mysterious neighbor suddenly asks her out on a date, Adeline Rose has suspicions he's fishing for help with his bundle of...joy? By the date's end, she's convinced Noel's just as distant as he seems--until a scorching goodnight kiss burns away all thoughts of being careful.

Now Noel has more than one problem on his hands. Splitting baby duty between three badass assassins, figuring out how to fit in more time with Addy...and keeping both of them safe from the danger that's followed him home.

This book has been previously released.

Warning: Beware a killer with a heart of gold, a baby who needs constant changing, and unrequited love that's actually quite...requited.

ARC REVIEW Breaking Without You by Carrie Ann Ryan

Breaking Without You (Fractured Connections, #1)Fractured Connections #1, This book is an emotional suckerpunch to your gut. It's good, so well written but emotionally heavy. It took me about twice along to read it as her normal books because I had to keep taking breaks. It is a sad book but it's all about moving on after the death of a loved one and that there is hope and life afterwards and in the case of Violet and Cam a HEA.

The same day she buries her best friend the boyfriend who broke her heart walks back into her life. Cam walked away from his family and the girl he loved. He never meant to hurt them or stay gone for so long but now he's back and trying to mend things with his brothers and hopefully with Violet. Violet thought she had moved on from Cam she even married and divorced but Cam came back different from when he left and now she's falling for the man he grew up to be.

Overall, this was an emotionally heavy book with a hopeful outlook and it was a great introduction to the series and it's characters.

Wherever Dax Knight sets foot, hell is bound to freeze over.

As a mercenary for the Order of the Senary, Dax departs for New England to assist his comrades in battling the vampire forces threatening to consume the Northeast. The last thing he expects to find is a gorgeous vampiress who surrenders to him entirely. Ensnared by her allure, their intense attraction ignites, and he discovers she isn’t what she seems.

Cindel Konstantinov has been on the run since she escaped her sire’s possession, trading one life of abuse and imprisonment for another. As her hope for freedom wanes, she encounters one of the infamous Knights, and his dangerous appeal is undeniable. After a life-altering moment of mercy, they careen down a path of secrets, lies, and a forbidden passion neither of them can resist. But when her past comes back to haunt them, they’ll have to face the consequences of their actions—and their desires.

Dax and Cindel will need each other more than ever as their world spirals into chaos. But are they strong enough to survive the oncoming storm?

Dax gets his big ol' frozen heart thawed out by a sexy little runaway. Oh my goodness this book, the narrative descriptive and the action so easy to visualize in my head so wonderfully written. Characters are well thought out and have just enough angst to make them interesting but not whinny, not to mention these guys have a pretty twisted sense of humor. The bad guys are evil, as they should be, and the good guys sometimes have to do bad things so people live. I absolutely loved this book.

Cindel, aka Cindy, ran away from her evil sire/lover/abuser/vampire ruler of New York and with the help of another particularly evil vampire she broke her ties to him making it impossible for him to find her. For the last three years she's barely survived doing what she has to do for blood, until one night she meets Dax. Having just slaughtered an entire yacht of vampires Dax is more injured than he would have liked and without Cindy's help he would have died on that yacht. Dax doesn't trust her at first but the fragile Cindy proves she can be trusted and that she is somehow like JJ, a vampire who can feel. Seeing how fragile she is Dax starts to teach Cindy how to fight and as Cindy learns her strength and capabilities the attraction between the two grows. When Cindy's life is on the line Dax will risk his own to make sure she's safe.

Overall, this is another fantastic story with great characters and a hot romance; I can not believe I have to wait even longer for Rome's book! Cindy had incredible growth in this book you can see her change from the fragile woman to badass (girl crush!).

ARC REVIEW The Infamous Duchess by Sophie Barnes

The Infamous Duchess (Diamonds in the Rough, #4) Diamonds in the Rough #4, I was really looking forward to Viola's book and was all excited when I found out that she was being paired with Henry Lowell, heir to the Viscount Armswell and brother of the last books hero. I liked Henry, I liked how his determination to make Viola his wife grew from respect and liking her into unshakeable love. Viola had been burned once before and when she married her father's old friend, the Duke of Tremaine, and he died the next day and she was left all the money; the rumors about her started. She cared about what they were saying but there was nothing she could do to stop them so she built her hospital and went about her business never going out into society. But now the new Duke of Tremaine is finally coming back from the West Indies to rightfully take his place and contest the will in which he was left nothing but the entitled lands. Henry is determined to help Viola and with help from an unlikely source he sets out to completely ruin Tremaine.

Aside from Henry's method of wooing Viola, the romance was a little underwhelming. Viola was much better as a side character than a main character and as much as I love internal struggle this book lacked the chemistry and excitement of the previous books. Overall it was a nice read but not quite as good as the previous books. I hope I'm not the only one kinda hoping that Carlton Guthrie gets a turn at a HEA.

ARC REVIEW Some Like it Spicy by Robbie Terman

Some Like It SpicyThe Perfect Recipe #1, I have read the other two books in this series each a stand alone so you don't have to read them if you don't want to but they are sooo goood! I love reading romance that has cooks/chefs/bakers throw in a cooking competition and I'm all over it. I really enjoyed this one, it has humor, excitement, and betrayal. Terman did a great job of portraying the nerve racking excitement of a competition. The sexual tension and chemistry between Ty and Ashton is super hot and breaking up the tension both in and out of the kitchen is the humor, which had some real laugh out loud moments.

Ashton learned how to cook from her grandmother and after culinary school her grandmother died and left her with some money to open her own restaurant. With her two best friends Ashton opened Sweet Home. Ashton has spent her whole life trying to make her father proud he's her toughest critic, and as a famous food critic he's pretty harsh. Ty Cates is tired of the celebrity lifestyle and the paparazzi and all the sycophants who all want something from him; it's been months since been in a kitchen and even longer than that since he's been in his own restaurant's kitchen. He would love to get out of the spotlight and spend some time with his family and just cook but he has contracts to fulfill.

Ty and Ashton fall in love during The Next Celebrity Chef, but fraternization between  contestant and judge is forbidden. Ashton keeps thinking that it's all just a fling and by the end of the show it will be over that doesn't keep her from falling in love. Ty knows what he has with Ashton is much more than anything he's ever felt before and he's willing to risk everything on their relationship. But will their relationship survive when the truth comes out? Overall, it is a great book I loved the cheesy over top ending.

ARC REVIEW A Justified Murder by Jude Deveraux

A Justified MurderMedlar Mystery #2, Aunt and niece, Sara and Kate, along with their friend and basically roommate, Jack are yet again on the hunt for who murdered a seamlessly helpless old lady. Just a few months after their first adventure and all three say they are going to let the proper authorities handle it but everyone who had contact with the deceased comes to them explaining why they would have had cause to murder and before you know it Sara, Kate and Jack are once again neck deep in the case. The more they look into this lady's past the more they realize she wasn't who she seamed and it quickly goes from a whodunit to a who didn't do it seeing how most everybody had a motive.

I love Kate and Jack, their banter is so funny. Jack obviously has feelings for Kate but she's not in the right place for a relationship so she just blows off Jack when he makes certain comments and teases him referring to him as "brother like". Sara as a retired author has a unique way of looking at the world which comes in handy in solving murders. I loved that characters and I enjoyed the mystery and really liked the ending. They seem to get distracted a lot but just about every little thing is important. Overall, it was a good read.
