ARC REVIEW Spectre by Shiloh Walker

SpectreYay! Reading Shiloh Walker makes me happy. Spectre is a stand alone, although I do hope Tia's brother will get his own story eventually, told in the third person but switches focus between Tia and Meric. I love the characters in this book. Meric "Spectre" was raised to be a killer, his father was ruthless and if Meric hadn't of killed him at the age of 14 Meric would be a soulless and ruthless as his father. Sarge found him shortly after and saved Meric and while Meric still grew up to be an assassin Sarge fine tuned his skills and taught Meric to trust and have morals and rules. Even after Sarge died Meric never strayed from his own rules so when Boston mob boss and leader of a white slavery ring offers him a job to kill the sister of the cop who busted his brother Meric knows he's not going to take the job band unless he does does something someone else will.

Tia had a difficult childhood with a irrational mother who hated her and after she died was left to an Aunt who clearly hated her too. Tia always knew she was different from everyone else and everyone else made it clear she wasn't "normal". It wasn't until she was older that she was diagnosed with high-functioning autism, Aspergers. It took Tia a while to find her "normal" but she likes her life now with her best friend and her brother, even though he lives in another state, and her job teaching painting to kids who are just like her.

Spectre knows the only way to keep Tia safe is to remove her from the playing field; after all you can't kill what you can't find so he kidnaps her. But he was smart enough and observant enough to realize the transition and move would be easier for her with familiar things so he brings her dog, and art supplies and with how organized she is it was easy to pack clothes and toiletries. I love that he cared enough to do this that he understood that it mattered. Tia is scared and confused at first but when Spectre explains to her what's happening and when she gets proof she's more cooperative. I love that they are both blunt they are straight forward with their emotions and fears their was no whining and hemming and hawing, and I love Meric's solution.

Overall, this was a great read. The action is intense and the romance is hot, with some light bondage play. The story as a whole was fantastic, I love Shiloh Walker's writing she writes and I completely become immersed in the story and invested in the characters. If you are new to Shiloh Walker she does tend to get graphic, one reason I love her, as the Warning that is attached to the blurb says Warning: This isn’t a snuggly, comfy read. The male MC is a hired killer, while the heroine is neuro-atypical. Some dark material is involved—the hero kidnaps the heroine. There’s also violence when he goes on a rampage against those who put a contract on her. Also references of abuse (not against the heroine). Also very graphic, erotic scenes with minor bondage play.

Wherever Dax Knight sets foot, hell is bound to freeze over.

As a mercenary for the Order of the Senary, Dax departs for New England to assist his comrades in battling the vampire forces threatening to consume the Northeast. The last thing he expects to find is a gorgeous vampiress who surrenders to him entirely. Ensnared by her allure, their intense attraction ignites, and he discovers she isn’t what she seems.

Cindel Konstantinov has been on the run since she escaped her sire’s possession, trading one life of abuse and imprisonment for another. As her hope for freedom wanes, she encounters one of the infamous Knights, and his dangerous appeal is undeniable. After a life-altering moment of mercy, they careen down a path of secrets, lies, and a forbidden passion neither of them can resist. But when her past comes back to haunt them, they’ll have to face the consequences of their actions—and their desires.

Dax and Cindel will need each other more than ever as their world spirals into chaos. But are they strong enough to survive the oncoming storm?

Dax gets his big ol' frozen heart thawed out by a sexy little runaway. Oh my goodness this book, the narrative descriptive and the action so easy to visualize in my head so wonderfully written. Characters are well thought out and have just enough angst to make them interesting but not whinny, not to mention these guys have a pretty twisted sense of humor. The bad guys are evil, as they should be, and the good guys sometimes have to do bad things so people live. I absolutely loved this book.

Cindel, aka Cindy, ran away from her evil sire/lover/abuser/vampire ruler of New York and with the help of another particularly evil vampire she broke her ties to him making it impossible for him to find her. For the last three years she's barely survived doing what she has to do for blood, until one night she meets Dax. Having just slaughtered an entire yacht of vampires Dax is more injured than he would have liked and without Cindy's help he would have died on that yacht. Dax doesn't trust her at first but the fragile Cindy proves she can be trusted and that she is somehow like JJ, a vampire who can feel. Seeing how fragile she is Dax starts to teach Cindy how to fight and as Cindy learns her strength and capabilities the attraction between the two grows. When Cindy's life is on the line Dax will risk his own to make sure she's safe.

Overall, this is another fantastic story with great characters and a hot romance; I can not believe I have to wait even longer for Rome's book! Cindy had incredible growth in this book you can see her change from the fragile woman to badass (girl crush!).

I can not elaborate on the plot more than the blurb because I am scared of spoilers. Needless to say this is the conclusion of Rook and Stephanie's story and boy it's a doozie. I was able to guess certain aspects of the story just because in my mind that was the only way it could have happened. But the end left me all giddy and satisfied.
MJP writing as always is tremendous, her active setting sweeps you away to that Fantasy Island. First person POV that alternates between Stephanie and Rook, which is the first time we get Rook's perspective on things and that really adds to the story. Of course no MJP story would be complete without the smartassed heroine, Stephanie, making inopportune remarks, which gives this dark romance a great sense of humor. For all the twists and turns and the merry chase MJP led us on it ends fantastically.

 Mr. Rook’s Island

Genre Dark Romantic Suspense

Release Date November 3rd, 2017

Blurb

From NEW YORK TIMES Bestseller Mimi Jean Pamfiloff, Comes Part Two of Mr. Rook’s Island, a Sexy, Dark, Romantic Suspense.

SHE KNOWS HE’S BAD. THE QUESTION IS, HOW BAD?

Stephanie Fitzgerald is nobody’s pawn. Determined to discover the truth about a missing loved one, she lands a job at the world’s most exclusive resort, working for the only man with the answers—Mr. Rook. He’s shockingly handsome, thoroughly intimidating, and completely off-limits.

But the truth she seeks isn’t black and white, and Mr. Rook is a far more dangerous temptation than she ever knew.

Will Stephanie resist her desires, or will she be lured into Mr. Rook’s world of hidden sins?

I can't really divert away from the blurb to much without revealing too much of the story. I will say that Mimi Jean Pamfiloff seamlessly blended together King, Mermen, and Fantasy Island to make a mysterious island with more secrets than El Corazon and a man with all most as many than King.

Classic Mimi, seriously she is the mistress of answering question with more questions and leaves you satisfied but still wanting more. Yes, that means cliffhanger.

Stephanie's new job on the island gives her the perfect opportunity to dig into Rook's secrets she knows he's still not telling her the full truth about what happened to her sister. All she needs to do is resist the sexual pull she has toward Rook and put off a mob boss. Her dreams can lead her to the truth. But is she really cut out for this, can she handle the truth or is that all a lie too?

Overall, it's another mindfuck by Mimi and I loved it.

PROLOGUE
It wasn’t supposed to be like this, you know. Such a fucking mess. But I should’ve guessed this was coming. Because when life becomes nothing but should-haves, there is no other possible outcome. My big sister, Cici, should’ve come home from her exotic island vacation four months ago. My father should’ve told me that Mr. Rook, the owner of the resort, came to see him with the news that Cici had drowned, instead of leaving me in the dark. I should’ve known better than to borrow money from a very dangerous man in order to fund my search for her. There are so many should-haves that I’m sick to my stomach with remorse.
But by far, my biggest regret is the moment I stepped foot on this island. Because once I set eyes on the devastatingly handsome Mr. Rook, I couldn’t stop myself from wanting him, from dreaming about him, from feeling drawn to the connection between us. I know it’s wrong.
Nothing good will come of it.
Because now I’m beginning to believe that Cici didn’t die drunk, swimming in the middle of the night. Just like I suspect that this past week with Rook—the touches, the forbidden kisses, the sexual hunger in his steel blue eyes—was an elaborate hoax meant to distract me.
Because he’s not just a wealthy businessman.

This island is no paradise.

And I’m no fucking idiot.

So while resisting this man will be the hardest thing I’ve ever done, I will find out what really happened to my sweet Cici. Otherwise I won’t ever be able to let her go, and my broken heart will be the end of me.

My name is Stephanie Fitzgerald. I am twenty-six years old, London born, New York raised, and I am the newest employee of Mr. Rook’s Island, where “your fantasy is our business.”

ARC REVIEW Pieces of Me by Shiloh Walker

Pieces of Me is an odd one. If you know Shiloh Walker's writing you know she can get really dark and this one is no exception. Shadow Grace Harper was a young artist who met an older man and fell head over heals, as the years pass she finally break out of his controlling hold, he has manipulated her and abused her to the point she is no longer the person she once was. She has become so paranoid he'll come and force her back that she has become obsessive compulsive about her locks, windows and everything else. It's been three years and she is just starting to feel in control of her life, sort of. She has a routine she follows and any deviation will cause severe panic attacks.

One morning as her usual she spend down at the beach drawing, the man she nicknamed Lobo because his tattoo spoke to her. Caught completely by surprise she panics, it's only late she realizes she left her notebook, the same one she's been drawing very suggestive pictures of him. The whole day she spent worrying about her notebook absolutely certain it would be gone forever. But the next morning she finds it sitting at her usual spot but on one of the pictures her mystery guy wrote something.  She continues the morning as usual except this time he sits with her introduces himself, Dillian Jenkins.

Dillian is patient and kind to Shadow, he pushes her comfort zone but yet she feels safer with him than she has in the last eight years. But Shadow's ex-husband hasn't left her alone completely he has been paying someone to watch her and when Dillian comes into the picture he comes back to torment Shadow once again. But can Dillian offer her the much needed strength so she can finally get rid of her ex for good or will Dillian's own secret betray that trust.

Overall, the story was heartbreaking. The insta-lust between Shadow and Dillian was hot; sexual chemistry up the wazoo. Unfortunately this has one of those non-end kinda endings, it could be a cliffhanger but it doesn't feel like it. I enjoyed it it was an emotional journey for Shadow. Shiloh Walker knows how to write heroes I love.

ARC REVIEW Wrecked by JB Salsbury

Wrecked is a dark and emotional standalone story. It deals with a soldier who suffers from PTSD and a young woman who is scared to live her life. It a first person POV that switches between Sawyer and Aden. I loved this one, it was emotional, heartwarming, and tearjerking with an ending that just about breaks your heart. (Yes there is a HEA). I don't read first person very often, (mainly just for urban fantasy) but when I find an author who writes first person well I will stick with them and JB switching from Sawyer to Aden satisfies my need to be an omniscient reader.

Sawyer thought it was unfair that the vibrant sister with no fear and a wanderlust was the one dying. Sawyer and Celia are identical twins but other than that they are nothing alike. Sawyer has a fear of life of doing anything and it stems from a when she was a kids but now that Celia is dying Sawyer promised to do one thing for her. But fulfilling her dying sister's last wish is going to be more difficult than she anticipated.

Aden loved the Army but after a mission went wrong and Aden lost so many men that trusted him to make the right choice he left the Army and now lives in sunny Southern California managing his uncles rental properties and fishing all day. Aden learned early on that being around people wasn't good and was content to just fish all day until one of his uncle's favorite tenet came back after a couple months away. Celia is a walking contradiction from the stories he has heard from his uncle and all the pictures on the walls of her house he expected someone different, the Celia he meet seems to be the opposite, she's shy and reserved almost skittish. But she surprises him at every turn. She is absolutely beautiful and Aden can't stop thinking about her.

Sawyer thought it would be easy filling in for her sister while she packs up her stuff, pretending to be Celia it was something they had fun with as children now Sawyer just thinks it is cruel not to tell her sister's friends that Celia is dying and won't be coming back. Aden almost makes the pretending easy, he challenges her and stirs emotions in her she has never felt before she just hates that he has feelings for Celia and not her. Sawyer's heart is breaking because she can never tell Aden the truth. Aden's PTSD isn't an easy thing to overcome, and he thinks that he can never be with Celia because of it.

Overall, I laughed, I cried, I fell in love with Aden and Sawyer. It's a wonderfully written romance and if you are prone to crying during books have tissues on hand.

ARC REVIEW Mr. Rook by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff

Mr. Rook

Rook’s Island Series, Part One

by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff
From NEW YORK TIMES Bestseller Mimi Jean Pamfiloff, Comes Part One of Mr. Rook’s Island, a Sexy, Dark, Romantic Suspense.

He’s Enigmatic, Dangerously Handsome, and COMPLETELY OFF-LIMITS…

The women who vacation on Mr. Rook’s exclusive island are looking for one thing and one thing only: to have their wildest romantic fantasies come to life. Pirates, cowboys, billionaires—there’s nothing Rook’s staff can’t deliver.
But when Stephanie Fitzgerald’s sister doesn’t return after her week in paradise, Stephanie will have to pose as a guest in order to dig for answers. Unfortunately, this means she’ll need to get close to the one thing on the island that’s not on the menu: the devastatingly handsome and intimidating Mr. Rook. And he’s not about to give the island’s secrets away.

Mr. Rook is the first part of Mimi Jean Pamfiloff's newest series Mr. Rook's Island. Yes I said PART meaning there is a cliffhanger, frankly when it comes to Mimi it only surprises me when there isn't a cliffhanger. Mr. Rook's Island is a Fantasy Island-esk place, (rumor has it the tv show was based on the real life Mr. Rook's Island, or so says the book) Here woman granted a fantasy, something they have always wished to do, and for a pretty penny Mr. Rook grants that wish. The publicity is non-existent it is spread by word of mouth and vetted extremely well, the private island lives well off radar.

Stephanie Fitzgerald has plans of her own and they don't include giving into any fantasy. Stephanie managed to lie her way through the vetting and get a spot on the plane going out to Mr. Rook's Island. All this because her sister went missing and the last place she was was Mr. Rook's Island. The chances that Stephanie will get to met Mr. Rook are slim to none but she manages to lie, whine, and manipulate her way to Mr. Rook. Rook knows something is up with Stephanie and he has made it his duty to fulfill her fantasy personally, but it is way more than anything Rook expected and far more dangerous than Stephanie anticipated.

Overall, this was fantastic! The writing is dark and humourous, what Mimi does best. Mimi has raised the bar on this Dark Romance. The mystery and romance found on Mr. Rook's Island is a well thought out tease for what's to come.

ARC REVIEW Hunt the Dawn by Abbie Roads

So fantastic, Abbie Roads has nailed the dark, disturbing, and sexy. What's nice is that you don't have to read the first book of the series, Race the Darkness, in order to read this one; it helps but it's not required. This book was everything I hoped for and more when I thought about Lathan story. Evanee I really love her, she did what she had to do to survive and even when at her lowest it didn't stop her.

Lathan is unbelievable with his overactive olfactory being able to see memories and feelings from a person's smell. He works with the FBI as a special consultant he helps track down killers and he's one the path of one who is constantly changing his MO but the nose knows and Lathan knows all these victims were killed by the same person. Lathan because of his talent doesn't get close to people for the exception of one, his childhood friend and FBI contact. Evanee is working at a truck stop diner surviving on tips trying to avoid the pervert who has been harassing her. Evanee's car stops working she pulls off into a rest stop and who should show up but her step brother the pervert. Lathan happen to be riding by and he smelled Evanee's fear he pulls over to help. Everything about about Evanee calls to Lathan, he instinctually trusts her and knows he must protect her at all costs. Evanee is in shock by the time the stranger rescues her she allows him to take her to his home until she feels better. Evanee, like Lathan, trusts him she knows that she should know better but it's an instinctual need to be with him. Lathan can drop his guard around her and not get bombarded with scent memories. Evanee, on the other hand, her dreams start getting worse, she's connecting with the murdered victims in Lathan's case and leads to evidence. The serial killer figures out who but not how, but at all costs he must stop Lathan from exposing him so he focus on the person closest to Lathan; Evanee.

Overall, this truly exceeded my expectations for the book.

Oh Man, I love Cynthia Eden. Shattered is book three in the LOST series it picks up right after the events of Twisted. Like the previous two books this is a dark romantic suspense, and much like Beware of Me (from the Dark Obsessions series) it centers on a criminal anti-hero and heroine with a tortured past. Like with most of Cynthia Eden’s recent books it is not for the squeamish; bad things happen, things that can make us uncomfortable but the book has more than that in it and it balances out so it’s not so angsty and depressing. Hell the book is about serial killers it’s not suppose to make us feel comfortable. I love it when characters survive through the worst of the worst and come back kicking. Both Jax and Sarah have not lived easy lives they are who they are because of it but they haven’t let it stand in their way. I love Cynthia Eden’s writing style, it’s very fluid and it teases you makes you second guess your own suspicions. This one was a surprise and I was so wrapped up in the characters and what they were doing the twist at the end took me by surprise. I love the opening line of both the Prologue and Chapter One, so completely creepy it sets the mood for the rest of the book.

Sarah and Jax are kindred spirits, two lost souls searching for something. Neither know what it is they exactly looking for but they find it in each other. They both understand the darkness that dwells deep inside them; what they hide from everyone else but they see it in each other. Sarah and Jax fight to find a serial killer who seems to have targeted Sarah because of her father, a well known serial killer in his own right. But for some reason he is trying to ruin Jax also. The ending takes an unforeseen twist that almost costs Sarah and Jax their lives.

Shattered is a definite keeper, the books in this series just keep getting better and better. Overall, this has to be one of my favorite Romantic Suspense this year so far.

ARC REVIEW Beware of Me by Cynthia Eden

Cynthia Eden's Dark Obsessions series book four, but every book is a stand alone. However in the case of Ethan Barclay reading the previous books will give an insight into who Ethan really is. I love this series. This book has the right mix of suspense and romance it is very well balanced. It does get a tad repetitive always referring to the past. But I loved Carly and Ethan and I hope the series isn’t over yet.

Ethan Barclay is criminal, he is a murderer, but he's not the villain of the story; Ethan is the anti-hero. Now I dislike stories that glamorize the criminal lifestyle, this isn't one of them. Ethan is bad he is what he is and he doesn't try to be anything else. He knew as a child he was destined to be something better then what he was. He worked hard to get where he is and now that he has reached his monetary goal he plans to go straight and he wants the one who got away.

Carly Shay was young and stupid and paid the price for it. She has lived in hiding away from her past the only reason she reappeared in Ethan's life was because her stepsister needed her. Now the bad guys are coming out of the woodwork to seek vengeance for the man her and Ethan killed. Carly has had a hard time moving on and even after all these years she still is on edge. The reappearance of Ethan in her life is comforting but scary she doesn't want to want him after everything that happened and then he just walked away; she just wants to be left alone to her life. Ethan's showing up after all these years is for her protection the news that old enemies are after her.

Ethan never wanted to leave Carly; he always thought he wasn’t good enough for her. He may have walked away from her but he never let her go. He has kept tabs on her all these years and now with her life on the line he is willing to do anything to keep her safe even from the FBI.

Overall, it was a great read, and in the end it even surprised me with whodunit.

ARC REVIEW Wanted by Dee Tenorio

A Deadly Secrets novel by Dee Tenorio, I believe is the second book in the series. The first book Convicted, which I have also read. I liked this one a bit more then the first and aside from being painfully predictable it was a very good romantic suspense. This is a dark romance I need to throw that out here now it deals with some pretty bad things in Whitney's past. There is a nice flow to Tenorio's writing style and even paced suspense that doesn't slow down. The characters have tortured pasts that really make you route for them and want to smack them when they are being stupid.

When we first met this small California town it was over run with a horrible biker gang. Rick Terlane returns home and is determined to clean it up and with marine buddy Cade Evigan and undercover DEA agent and hometown girl Katrina Killan to help they successfully wipe the gang out. Now time has past and the residents are still trying to move on past their past. Cade and Kat happily together and a clean run Deputy department and everything seems like it going back to normal until the one of the former corrupt Deputies ends up shot dead and all the circumstantial evidence points to one person Rick's best friend Whitney Peterson

Whitney has been in love with Rick since forever, but she can not share what she thought she had to do in order so protect her mother and her niece. I   t's her dirty little secret to carry around with her forever, or so she thought when the man behind it all ends up dead and she is the number one suspect. One more body shows up and Whit and Rick are stuck between a rock and a hard place as their feelings and sexual attraction get in the way of Rick trying to find out the truth. Whit knows she should trust Rick with the information but is afraid that when he finds out he will no longer look at her the same way again let alone be able to love her. Rick starts off not wanting in any relationship because of the incident that ended his military career but the more trouble points to Whit he grows more protective and realizes his feelings are stronger than he ever thought. But is the old adage right will the truth set you free? Or will Whit be right and it ruins everything she has worked for including her love for Rick.

ARC REVIEW Final Protocol by J.C. Daniels

One of my favorite dark romance/urban fantasy writers has written one of my top favorite genres, science fiction, to say I was happy is an understatement. When I finally stopped bouncing up and down in my chair and settled down to read it I was absorbed into a futuristic world of demented villains and tortured anti-heroes and strange alien races. I enjoyed it, I didn't love it but it was still a good read. One thing that kept throwing me off was all the alien words it was hard to keep track of what meant what. There was a lot of internal monologue, it is in first person POV so she tends to get overly depictive in describing the setting and how it made her feel. Some of it felt rushed, parts I wish there was more of and other parts I wish there was less. What I did love was the characters and the emotional strength of Silence. Silence is the quintessential Shiloh Walker/J.C. Daniels Heroine.

*It is not for the faint of heart, if you feel rape doesn't belong anywhere in romance then don't read this.*

Silence was born ten years ago to lies, abuse, and rape; if she existed before then the memories only live in her dreams. Her owner, Gold, a disturbed man uses her as he sees fit and that usually means as an assassin. She was trained to kill and yet the one person she wants to kill more than anyone else in the world as rigged it so she can't.
