ARC REVIEW 1001 Dark Nights: Inked Nights by Carrie Ann Ryan

Inked Nights (Montgomery Ink #8.5; 1001 Dark Nights #82)Montgomery Ink #8.5, As with the other 1001 Dark Night novellas this can be read as a stand alone. One night a month for the last four years Derek and Olivia have been meeting at a hotel for one night of unbridled passion, no names they only know each other as D and O, no promises aside from them meeting that one night. It all changed when Derek broke the rules he told her his name. It was then Olivia realized who he was, and remembered him and now nothing will ever be the same again. As soon as Derek said his name he knew he had gotten in to deep with her, he realized he started to want more then one night, but something spooked Olivia and now he may never see her again. But it's a small world and Olivia just happens to be his bosses neighbor.

Derek and Olivia both carry a lot of guilt with them, Olivia especially. I love all this, the whole Montgomery Universe, characters can be so broken and damaged but yet they still find their way and get the HEA they deserve. Derek and Olivia together are smokin' hot. Right off the bat these two the chemistry is off the charts and I loved seeing Olivia and Derek hot and heavy but I also loved seeing them mend the past together and start all over, the epilogue was especially a nice touch.

Overall, it's another great story from Carrie Ann Ryan. Passions always run hot in her books and this one is no different, she also brings out the best in angst. I always manage to make room in my schedule to read Carrie Ann Ryan's books because I know they will be worth it.

BLOG TOUR *AUTHOR POST* Awaken The Darkness by Dianne Duvall

Awaken the Darkness
(Immortal Guardians #8)
by Dianne Duvall
Kindle Edition, 414 pages
Publication: July 10th 2018 by Dianne Duvall

Return to the "utterly addictive" (RT Book Reviews), "fast-paced and humorous" (Publishers Weekly) world of New York Times bestselling author Dianne Duvall's Immortal Guardians.

He awakens encapsulated in dirt with no knowledge of how he came to be there. Riddled with injuries, he can remember neither his past nor who he is. Nor can he remember what he is. But surely no mortal man could survive being buried deep beneath the earth. All he knows with certainty is that the soothing voice and presence of the woman moving around above enables him to endure the agony of his wounds. And he will do whatever it takes to be with her.

When Susan first sees the old two-story house for sale, such warmth and longing fill her that—against all reason—she makes an offer. It will take years of hard work and money she frankly doesn’t have to fix up the place. So she can’t explain why she bought it. She also can’t explain what compels her to spend hours one night, digging in the basement until she unearths a man. A man who still lives and breathes despite having been buried alive. A man whose intense brown eyes glow amber with pain, declaring him far more than ordinary. Susan knows she should keep her distance. He has no memory and possesses gifts that would make most fear him. But as the two work together to unravel the mystery of his past, she finds herself drawn in by his teasing nature and tender touch. So much so that she loses her heart to him even as they find themselves hunted by unknown enemies who are ruthless in their quest to capture them.

WELCOME DIANNE DUVALL TO THE BLOG!!!!!!!!

Hello! Thanks so much for joining me. I’m very happy to be here, celebrating the release of AWAKEN THE DARKNESS, Immortal Guardians Book 8. If you like a lot of action, passion, humor and romance in your stories, then I think you’ll enjoy Susan and Stanislav’s book. And if you’re new to my Immortal Guardians series, don’t worry. Each novel and novella can be read as a stand-alone, so you won’t be lost if you dive in with this one. You’ll just know more about the secondary characters if you read them in order.

I’m a bit of an introvert by nature and tend to not talk about myself much. So today I thought I would change things up a bit and share with you…

5 Things You May Not Know About Me.

1) I once wielded a machete and alternately snuck up behind unsuspecting victims or ran toward them while screaming like a madwoman in an Independent film. I was also once disemboweled in an independent film and later crawled out of a moonlit grave. Horror movies are really fun to make. LOL

2) As a child and young adult, I used to spend my summers exploring ghost towns and old abandoned mines with my parents. Not the tourist attraction ghost towns. But the ones you could only find after hours of traveling barely distinguishable dirt roads that could barely be navigated by a jeep with four-wheel drive. And though I never encountered any ghosts in the crumbling structures we explored, those adventures sparked my imagination and fueled my love of paranormal fiction. They’re also likely the reason a ghost has been part of my Immortal Guardians series ever since I wrote the first book.

3) I binge-watch favorite TV shows. I hate watching a new episode of a favorite show, then waiting a week to see another, then waiting another week. And sometimes the many hats I wear as a writer leave me with a dearth of downtime that makes me forget to tune in. So I usually just wait until the show hits DVD or Netflix, then sit down and binge-watch the whole season over a weekend, usually as a reward for meeting a big publishing deadline.

4) That’s me singing in the A Sorceress of His Own trailer. And I’m still not sure how the composer and sound engineer talked me into doing it. LOL

5) Before I started writing full-time, I provided special effects make-up for local independent filmmakers. Some would call it blood and guts make-up. I also provided other special effects (like making safety glass that could be shattered on an actor without injuring him or her, that sort of thing). It was a lot of fun. And those experiences are why independent filmmaking is occasionally referenced in my Immortal Guardians books, namely in Night Reigns and Awaken the Darkness.

ARC REVIEW Hellfire series by Jena Gregoire

The Devil You Know (Hellfire Book 1) Hellfire #1, Formerly published in 2013 as the Demon Legacy series Jena Gregoire has revised and re-released her series. I loved the characters, I loved the plot and where she went with it but what got me was I needed more world building; a little bit more descriptive information on this paranormal world and a bit more history with the covens.  You are just kind of thrown into it and there is little explanation as to why; why the vampires and the witches are in the covens together, and some more character history. We know Dez and Vegas met four hundred years ago and have been friends ever since but I miss the sexual tension to the lead up to a relationship, I love that awkward and in this case drunken fumbling when the switch gets flipped from friend to lover. I did enjoy the fact that once they realized how much they meant to each other, that was it; and how early it was in the book. Everyone else in the book is like It's about time you two realized it, very amusing. I loved Lucas, he's a great comic relief and I sometimes have a hard time liking manwhores, but by this point in the story he's already over it and reformed.

A murdered records keeper is discovered the only thing missing is a list, quickly following her death is the death of several others all over the world. The risk is that the demon doing the killing is looking for a key, the key to open a portal to release all the demons. Dez, Vegas, and his brother Lucas are trying to find out who's behind the it and try to stop them. Dez, half demon half human, has realized her demon half has just been lying dormant her whole life and the exposure this demon has brought out her powers. But even with her new found powers they are still one step behind the demon and time is running out and the window to open the portal is coming.

Overall, I enjoyed it. I liked the characters and the plot well enough to want to read more. But I just wish there was more to it.

Speak of the Devil (Hellfire Book 2)Hellfire #2, Six months after the events of the last book, Dez is still missing and Vegas hasn't stopped worrying. They both have been killing as many demons as possible just not in the same place. When an old friend calls Dez out of the blue with new information Dez realizes she needs Vegas's help. After an awkward couple if hours they get things sorted out and are even stronger than ever. A startling realization that the person behind the events in the last book wasn't working alone and that even more demons escaped before they closed the gate. Dez if faced with a choice of two paths she could take one that could possible end it all quick and easy or the hard way.

There's a little bit more personal history revealed in this one for Dez but still so much about this world is left unknown. I do like the two new characters, Charlie and Harley. I like the whole ether thing too, that was pretty cool. Overall, very intense ending and I can't wait to find out what happens next. I hope the shifter do come more into play in the future, I'm a sucker for shifters.

Hellfire Anthology, This contains the prequel and one interlude in between books 1 and 2, the other half of this book is an introduction to another character who's going to be introduced in the next book.
Whispers in the Ether: A Hellfire Anthology

Burning 0.5: A brief look at how Lucas and Natalia fell in love and what happened to her and what set off the events for the coming books.

Suffering 1.5: A very short story about how much both Dez and Vegas are longing for each other and a clue as to how strong Dez is becoming.

Reckoning 2.5: A brand new story, that is also kind of the prequel to a spinoff series. And is mainly shifters, yay finally.

Overall, the series can be read without reading this but not the other way around to read this you need to read the series. It was a nice little interludes that give you a better look into the characters.

ARC REVIEW Relentless by Elizabeth Dyer

Relentless (Somerton Security #2)Somerton Security #2, While this is part of a series and part (a miniscule part) goes back to the first book this can be read as a standalone. I'm not much for mafia tropes but this was Ethan's book and that I really wanted to know what happens with that miniscule part connecting this book to the first one. I really liked this one, I love me some strong female characters and you don't get stronger than Natalia. Ethan is a bit of a tarnished white knight and instead of getting the damsel in distress he falls for the black knight, Natalia. This book was intense, fast paced and well written. The chemistry between Ethan and Natalia, wow, their repertoire was intelligent and very telling; their first conversation with each other gave away more than they intended but both Natalia and Ethan are very intuitive. I absolutely loved them together.

Natalia and her sister watched as their uncle, Hernan, executed their father right in front of them. Natalia swore to protect her sister, Ana Maria, and shortly after their father's murder Natalia proved her worth to Hernan by killing the man meant to kill her since then Hernan has had the perfect leverage against Natalia; threaten Ana Maria and he can get Natalia to do just about anything. Natalia deals with quite a bit emotionally she's not as detached as she should be since the Vega Family's own sicario trained her and Hernan liked that no one would suspect such a deadly weapon in such a beautiful package.

Will Bennett was presumed dead after a mission gone bad a year ago, it was recently discovered that he's still alive and being held captive by Hernan Vega. The only way to find out where Will is being kept is to infiltrate the organization and hack into the network. Ethan is posing as their new accountant but what he finds is so much more than just Will, someone besides the old accountant was stealing from the Vega Family. Ethan's only way to find Will's exact location is with Natalia's help. Ethan feels responsible for Will's predicament and he is willing to risk everything to find him, Natalia knows this and if it comes to it she doesn't want Ethan to have to choose between her and Will.

Overall, such a good read. I really hope that there are going to be more books because Elizabeth Dyer is quickly becoming one of my favorites. Both Ethan and Natalia are wonderfully tortured souls and fall so hard in love they are willing to sacrifice themselves for the other's goal. This is one of those books I can easily see being made into a movie.

ARC REVIEW Digging A Hole by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff

Digging A Hole

Mimi Jean Pamfiloff

Synopsis:
From New York Times Bestseller, Mimi Jean Pamfiloff, comes a new Romantic Comedy. He’s the meanest boss ever. She’s the sweet shy intern. They’re about to wreck each other crazy. My name is Sydney Lucas. I am smart, deathly shy, and one hundred percent determined to make my own way in the world. Which is why I jumped at the chance to intern for Mr. Nick Brooks despite his reputation. After ten failed interviews at other companies, he was the only one offering. Plus, everyone says he knows his stuff, and surely a man as stunningly handsome as him can’t be “the devil incarnate,” right? Wrong. Oh…that man. That freakin’ man has got to go! I’ve been on the job one week, and he’s insulted my mother, wardrobe shamed me, and managed to make me cry. Twice. Underneath that stone-cold, beautiful face is the evilest human being ever. But I’m not going to quit. Oh no. For once in my life, I’ve got to make a stand. Only, every time I open my mouth, I can’t quite seem to muster the courage. Perhaps my revenge needs to come in another form: destroying him quietly. Because I’ve got a secret. I’m not really just an intern, and Sydney Lucas isn’t my real name.

Once again Mimi Jean Pamfiloff astounds and entertains with her quirky heroines and plots that keep you guessing when you are not ROTFLYourAO. Book three in the OHellNo series continues with a book that can be read as a standalone unless you like to know the backstories of everyone in which case at least read Oh Henry. It's revealed pretty early in the book that Sydney Lucas is really Georgie Walton the youngest child in the Walton empire. She's doing this to prove to everyone that she isn't fragile and needs to be coddled. Her plan is to grow a backbone, learn something that will impress her siblings and prove to them that she can be strong enough to run the company with them. Her best friend gets her a job in one of her own companies as an assistant to the worst boss ever. Now all she has to do is stand up to him and not fall in love with him.

This book really does take you on a wild ride, there you are driving along peacefully thinking things are going just fine then suddenly Mimi (the driver) takes a wild 90 degree turn out of nowhere and you are nowhere where you thought you would be and you loved every second of it. But that's how it is with most her books you jump into the book knowing it's going to be wild and newbies to her work either jump on the Mimi train or run away screaming. So, like Scar in Lion King said, Be Prepared.

Overall, I think it's safe to say I loved this book. Nick and Sydney it's an emotional and angsty but at the same time it has you laughing book. For those who have read Oh Henry it does explain what happened when the Walton family went missing. This was a must read for me but then I do have my own car on the Mimi Train.

ARC REVIEW Whiskey Reveals by Carrie Ann Ryan

Whiskey Reveals (Whiskey and Lies, #2)Whiskey and Lies #2, Fox finds his perfect match in a whiskey hazed hook up. It's not that Fox wasn't looking for a HEA he just wanted to find his place in the world before he thought about settling down. He loves being the editor of his own newspaper it means more paperwork than he thought but he always felt like something was still missing from his life. Melody was just looking for a place to start over, her grandmother gave her that chance when she offered her a home and Melody found the perfect place for a dance studio. Melody just wanted to forget her past but her past doesn't want her to forget.

Fox and Melody hooked up one night about a month ago, both assuming that it would be a one night deal but Fox hasn't been able to get her out of his head. As soon as Melody found out Fox wasn't a tourist that night she should have called off the whole thing but she really was enjoying herself and Fox that night so it wasn't a surprise to her when they ran into each other at The Old Whiskey Bar and Grill. Fox on the other hand was very pleasantly surprised even more so when he realized she is the granddaughter of his latest editorial, Whiskey's one and only Miss Pearl. Melody feelings are all over the place as strong as she feels for Fox she doesn't want to start something, she wants to concentrate on her dance studio and no matter how hard it is Fox is determined to keep her in his life even if that means just as friends.

But life is never that simple and Fox and Melody have more complications than just dealing with their feelings. Overall, Fox has won me over, I love that no matter what happened he took it in stride and never once doubted Melody. Miss Pearl is a hoot I hope we get more of her in the next book. Melody is a typical Carrie Ann Ryan heroine, headstrong, smart mouth, but with a vulnerability that she only lets her one and only see and in this her and Fox couldn't be as well matched as they are with each other. As always this is a well written emotional, romantic, and dirty, dirty, dirty. Naughty Fox. (Insert Eartha Kitt Catwoman purr here).

ARC REVIEW Laird of the Black Isle by Paula Quinn

Laird of the Black Isle (The MacGregors: Highland Heirs, #7)
The MacGregors: Highland Heirs #7, I am Loving this series. Lachlan MacKenzie is such an anti-hero and the whole feel of the book is very Beauty and the Beast. Mailie MacGregor is very head strong and fierce but also kind hearted and very loyal. Lachlan doesn't think much of himself anymore, not since his wife and daughter were murdered. In seeking their justice and murdering the blackguards in the same manner they killed his wife and daughter Lachlan became severely burned. Afterward he stayed hidden on Black Isle secretly helping his tenants only really having contact with his old nanny.  Mailie is ready to fall in love and get married but being constantly surrounded by her intimidating brothers and cousins it's hard to meet a guy who's worthy enough to stand up to her notorious family. Lach is told that his daughter is still alive but that only way to find out where she is is to kidnap Mailie MacGregor. Lach knows it's stupid but to have his little girl back he'd do anything; just to know she was alive gives him reason enough to risk his life.

Mailie makes it as difficult for him as possible and she's determined she'll get away until she finds out his story. She sees him through the eyes of the villagers who look up to him and a little boy who idolizes him. She sees him take in an orphaned brother and sister even though it hurts him. She sees that way her father's fiercely loyal dog easily follows him. She knows he is a man who can stand up to her brothers a man who is worthy of her love and affection. After losing his wife and seeking revenge in the manner that he did Lach never thought he would be worthy enough for another woman's love but for some reason Mailie does. Mailie makes him want things he hasn't wanted in a long time but there is still the fact that he still has to choose, give her up for his daughter or keep Mailie and never know if his daughter is still alive.

Overall, out of the ones I've read this is probably my new favorite. I loved the character, I loved the romance, I loved the storyline. Even the bad guy was appropriately evil. The dog and the kids added a bit of humor to a tense situation and Mailie once you've earned her loyalty you will never lose it, she is brave and beautiful and willing to go out on a limb for those she loves. The romance and the suspense it's all well written, it pulled me in and wouldn't let me go.

I didn't know what to expect from this book, this is a new author for me and I was a little hesitant about the rape and sexual assault, but the blurb really did catch my attention and I'm so glad I did read this because it is so good. For the most part this book really is Lexi finally dealing with and putting the last pieces of her life back together after her rape. If reading a truncated and detached version of the rape from Lexi's POV is not something you want to read skip the prologue. It was still very emotional even if it wasn't graphic. Chapter One picks on the aftermath of the rape, and even though Lexi sought out counseling she is still just a shadow of who she use to be and no one knows why. The catalyst for Lexi finally coming forward to her family and friends about what happened to her is her feelings for a guy, for Cruz Cunningham. Cruz fell for Lexi the moment she saw her but it was obvious she was dealing with something he just thought it was her trying to get her business off the ground, but when she confesses what happened Cruz is ready to go at her pace, whatever she needs he'll do it.  Meanwhile a white slavery ring has popped up and girls are disappearing, the police asked Cunningham Security for help. So while Cruz is trying to woo Lexi he's also worried because she falls into the victim profile.

This book was wow, the romance side and the suspense side. I got lost in this book I didn't want to put it down. I love that he switched off on calling her princess and warrior, basically whichever nickname she need to hear most at that moment is what he called her. I will be keeping my eye open for more A.K. Evans books in the future.

About the Author:

A.K. Evans is a married mother of two boys residing in a small town in northeastern Pennsylvania. After graduating from Lafayette College in 2004 with two degrees (one in English and one in Economics & Business), she pursued a career in the insurance and financial services industry. Not long after, Evans realized the career was not for her. She went on to manage her husband’s performance automotive business and drive the shop race cars for the next thirteen years. While the business afforded her freedoms she wouldn’t necessarily have had in a typical 9-5 job, after eleven years she was no longer receiving personal fulfillment from her chosen career path. Following many discussions, lots of thought, and tons of encouragement, Andrea decided to pursue her dream of becoming a writer. Between her day job, writing, and homeschooling her two boys, Evans is left with very little free time. When she finds scraps of spare time, she enjoys reading, doing yoga, watching NY Rangers hockey, dancing, and vacationing with her family. Andrea, her husband, and her children are currently working on taking road trips to visit all 50 states (though, Alaska and Hawaii might require flights).

The exciting fourth instalment of Station Seventeen. This does read well as a standalone I've only read the first one of the series and other than being mad at myself for not reading 2 and 3 yet and not knowing those character's stories I followed this story with no problem. Gamble and Kennedy are a great pair, the attraction has been there simmering in the background but neither of them acted on in it, but after the fire at The Crooked Angel Gamble isn't willing to keep it to himself anymore. Kennedy has never felt this way about anyone before. Working her way up the restaurant food chain she hasn't let any relationship get in her way of achieving her dream, even of that meant leaving her brother behind after raising him, but when he makes the wrong friend and makes a bad decision she's there to help in any way possible even of it means lying to the police. Thankfully Gamble is there to keep things on the straight and narrow and Kennedy has learned to trust him with more than just her heart and her bar but with the safety of her brother also.

One thing that always gets me with Kincaid and her Firefighter Romance is how intense it gets when she's writing about the fire. I always find myself white knuckling my e-reader or holding my breath until the scene is over. Her active setting is incredible when it comes to that the narrative description really feeds the imagination. Ooooo and the romance, dang girl, Gamble and Kennedy are a powder keg ready to explode and when they do it's plenty fireworks and hot enough to fog my glasses. Although the name Kennedy on a girl always reminds me of that nineties MTV VJ with the crazy hair and out of control mouth, ok I'm ageing myself there. I really loved this one it has everything a girl like me loves in a book.

Gamble dropped his gaze to his forearm, where Kennedy's fingers still pressed gently over his skin, and her eyes went round as she followed his downward stare.
“Oh. I shouldn’t…I mean, I didn’t…ugh, sorry,” she breathed, shifting to pull her hand away. But instinct collided with the desire already pumping through his veins, and he covered her fingers with his free hand, not hard enough to keep her from moving if she wanted to, but with enough intention to let her know he didn’t mind her touch.
In fact, he wanted it. Badly.
“I don’t want you to be sorry,” Gamble said, his heart beating faster as—instead of pulling away—Kennedy leaned in even closer.
Her fingers tightened, her pupils darkening her stare. “Then what do you want?” she whispered.
“This.”
He erased the space between them in one swift movement. But she’d moved, too, pressing forward to meet him at the same time he’d leaned in to slant his mouth over hers. Her lips were soft, yet full of purpose, quickly parting to give him better access, and fuck yeah, he took it. Sliding his tongue along the seam of her lips, Gamble tasted her once, then twice, before deepening the kiss. Kennedy was far from a passive participant—and didn’t that just make his cock stand up and pay all sorts of attention—angling herself closer despite the constraints of the Nissan’s front seat. A low sound rose up from her throat as he swept his tongue further into her mouth to let it tangle with hers. Her moan prompted him to drop the hand that had been covering hers in favor of reaching out to cup the back of her neck, hauling her closer for another hot, deep taste.
Christ, she gave even better than she got, and before Gamble could process the movement, she’d curled her fingers around the front of his T-shirt to grip the cotton by his shoulders and hold his body in place against her chest. His heart slammed against his sternum, each beat sounding off in his ears and daring him to kiss her harder, touch more of her, to not stop until she begged him for unspeakable things with that sharp, sultry mouth. Kennedy edged her teeth over the sensitive skin on the inside of his bottom lip, applying just enough pressure to send a bolt of dark, dirty want all the way through him, and the last of his already shaky common sense snapped.
“Be careful,” Gamble ground out against her mouth, his cock throbbing behind the fly of his jeans. “I bite back.”

When she’s not sitting cross-legged in an ancient desk chair known as “The Pleather Bomber”, she can be found practicing obscene amounts of yoga, whipping up anything from enchiladas to éclairs in her kitchen, or curled up with her nose in a book. Kimberly is a USA Today best-selling author and a 2015 RWA RITA® finalist who lives (and writes!) by the mantra that food is love. Kimberly resides in Virginia with her wildly patient husband and their three daughters.
