ARC REVIEW Lord of Vice by Erica Ridley

Lord of Vice (Rogues to Riches, #6)Rogues to Riches #6, "The road to me is paved with gold intentions" That right finally Maxwell Gideon! and the final Grenville sibling Byrony. This can be read as a stand alone but it is a pretty great series. The whole Grenville family is gregarious, Bryony is less so, she forces it, she hates going out in society for the soul purpose of finding a husband especially since her mother has made it her mission that Bryony marry higher than an Earl by the end of the season. Grenville are known for their musical talent Byrony is a wonder on the violin but it grates on her nerves that her mother very openly complains that the violin is her only winning point to attract a man. Byrony is so much more than just a pretty smile and a violinist, she can do math sums in her head she can assess a situation and tell you the best out come, she can look at an investment and know if it will be successful or not which is how she got to be involved in being the investor for The Cloven Hoof and the deed holder for the land and the building.

Maxwell Gideon rose from almost nothing to being the most infamous game hell owner in all of London. The men that once blackballed him from their gentlemen clubs are now blackballed by him. Maxwell has dreamed of this day for forever and the only thing keeping him from finally achieving that dream fully is his investor and their unwillingness to sell Max the deed. Bryony doesn't have all the information she needs to make an informed decision about selling Max the deed, and she needs to decide whether or not she want to keep it and continue getting rent from such a prosperous property or sell it and use the money to do something else and if her mother gets her way she end up married and everything she's worked so hard for goes to her husband that's something Bryony really doesn't want. Max and Bryony met by accident she snuck into The Cloven Hoof when it was supposed to be closed and Max caught her there, not knowing who she was. Even after he kicked her out she kept coming back and proved she was helpful on several occasion. Bryony was just happy that he actually listen to her suggestions. An attachment forms but Bryony feels guilty and blurts out who she really in right before he kisses her for the first time. Max feels betrayed but reluctantly agrees that she can shadow him there at The Clover Hoof for one month then she will make her decision about whether or not to sell; one month to fall in love.

Overall, this was a wonderful end to the series. Max really is a roasted marshmallow all crispy and bitter on the outside but all soft and gooey on the inside. Once he realizes his feeling for Bryony he feels like he's not good enough for her, and that he won't be welcomed in society even after meeting her siblings and their eclectic group Max still feels like he wouldn't belong. Bryony is so giving and so willing to put others before herself. They both were great characters and fit so perfectly together. As always Erica Ridley is a great story teller and a wonderful world builder.

ARC REVIEW Cowboy, Cross My Heart by Donna Grant

Cowboy, Cross My HeartHeart of Texas #2, In the first book, The Christmas Cowboy Hero, we met Abby Harper and her two teenage brothers, Brice and Caleb. Some years have past and now the brothers are all grown up each served in the military and are now working the rodeo and at the East Ranch. This can be read as a stand alone, but the first book is so good I recommend reading it. Naomi Pierce use to ride the rodeo she was so good no one has beat her high score in barrel racing but after the death of a very good friend Naomi left the rodeo and Texas all together and became a photographer. She back now to visit her mother and her best friend Whitney who is the Queen of the Rodeo this year.

Things start to go bad when someone attacks Whitney and Naomi and try to steal Naomi's camera, luckily Brice wasn't to far away and helps them out. Brice noticed Naomi when she was in the stands and she noticed him back an instant attraction. When Naomi asked Whitney about the attack Whitney clammed up, told Naomi to drop it which just made Naomi even more suspicious. The next day after Naomi developed some of the pictures she was taking right before the attack she gave some copies to Brice to see if he could help her identify the guy, Brice is wacked upside the head and had his hand smashed and the picture stolen and at the same time someone pushes Naomi in the arena and is almost killed by the wagon race. Still Whitney says nothing. With the help of Caleb, Abby, Clay, and their friends Jace, Cooper, and the Sheriff they are able to make an educated guess about what has been happening but who is involved and how deep does the corruption goes is still a mystery. It isn't until a guilt trip from Naomi does Whitney finally tell her what exactly has been going on and for how long. They press on further with their investigation making the guys behind it all very nervous.

Brice and Naomi don't have a normal courtship but the feelings are there and it's too strong for either of them to deny. Even with all this going on they still manage time to fall in love. It was a fairly easy romance with a few bumps and complications but the main focus of the story was what was happening within the rodeo pageant. Overall, I loved the story and the characters, I inhaled this book. Donna Grant is a fantastic writer I can't wait for the rest of the series.

ARC REVIEW Tough Luck Cowboy by A.J. Pine

Tough Luck Cowboy (Crossroads Ranch, #2)Crossroads Ranch #2, So I really enjoyed this one. We met both Luke and Lily in the first book, Luke is the middle brother in the Everett family and Lily is the co-owner the the best BBQ joint in the area. The book can be read as a stand alone but to really get the family dynamic and history I would recommend reading the first book.

Luke and Lily meet at a honky tonk three years ago, Luke was just getting started in the rodeo and Lily had just moved to the area to start working on her dream of owning her own farm to table restaurant. Luke didn't have eyes for anyone else that night but Lily unfortunately so did his best friend Tucker. Thinking he had nothing to offer a girl like Lily especially when Tucker had the money to help her with her restaurant dream he left and a couple of months later Lily and Tucker were married. For three years Luke has pretended he didn't like Lily to distance himself from her, it was hard enough to see her with his best friend. But now Lily and Tucker are officially divorced, tough luck for Lily the finalization happened on her birthday and then on the same day she gets her first gig as a caterer for a wedding for a famous T.V. baker, that can seriously make or break her career, it isn't until after she offers her services that she realizes the groom is her ex-husband. Luke was there and he tried to stop her but head strong and dead set to be the best at what she does Lily takes the job.

Luke has always managed to keep his head in the game but the night of Lily's birthday with the divorce and the announcement of the wedding and a baby all Luke can think about is Lily and that's how he got injured. All Luke has ever wanted, besides Lily, was to make it to the Nationals this year is his year even with this most recent injury Luke knows he can make it this year but the doctor has restricted him for six weeks to stay off a bull, horse, and definitely no rodeo which grates on Luke's nerves but he can still make Anaheim and qualify for Nationals. In the meantime he's elected to help set up the wedding making him work very closely with Lily. Through the wedding planning and organizing Lily begins to see Luke for who he really is, through her marriage it was easy to blame him for the acting of her husband but in retrospect she sees she was blaming him because it was easier than blaming Tucker or herself and Luke took the blame it helped keep his feelings in check. Now Lily knows the truth about Luke and his feelings but she hates that he still wants to ride in the rodeo even after all his injuries and the probability that if he gets another concussion could be fatal.

Overall, it was a great read. I love Luke and Lily they had a long wait for their romance, especially Luke who was in love with her the whole time. The story was a quick and easy read very well written with fantastic characters. The internal conflict they both deal with is emotional and heartwarming it had such a wonderful end. I can't wait for the next one.

ARC REVIEW The Duke with the Dragon Tattoo by Kerrigan Byrne

The Duke with the Dragon Tattoo (Victorian Rebels, #6)Victorian Rebels #6, First time reading this author for me and I'm jumping in at book 6, which was fine really even with all the mentioning of previous character and some of their involvement in this book this could be read as a stand alone. Rook is a feared pirate hunted by the Royal Navy, among others, but before he was a pirate he was Ash a young man who was found left for dead in a mass grave with no memory of who he was. He was nursed back to health by a girl, Lorelai. Lorelai was raised without her mother by a weak willed father and an abusive brother who crippled her by breaking her ankle as a child; the only thing that kept her going was her rescued animals and that one summer she spent with Ash. When Ash left he told he nothing would keep him from returning but as the years past she lost hope of ever seeing Ash again.

Lorelai's brother lost all the family's money the only thing he could use as collateral was Lorelai. Now Lorelai is getting ready for her wedding to a disgusting old man and only her sister-in-law, Veronica, to help. But as they arrive at the church her brother is killed in front of her and thenVeronica and her are kidnapped by pirates. It doesn't take long for Lorelai to realise that Rook, the most wanted man in the Country, is none other than her Ash. He's not the same Ash she once knew, this Ash is harder, mean, and rough around the edges and the first thing he does when he gets he on his ship is marry her. Despite her attraction to the man in front of her she is terrified of him and angry at him for being gone for twenty years and just assumes he can sweep in and take her away. Rook's love for Lorelai turned into obsession she was his guiding force, his north star, his hope and he spent the last twenty years dreaming about her and trying to find his way back to her. But in doing so along the way he was forced to act in ways that changed him. Now standing in front of his Lorelai he is having a hard time reconciling the fact that she may no longer want him.

Overall, this was a terrific pirate adventure, and no swashbuckling journey would be complete without buried treasure, mutiny, tattoos, and in Rook's case finally gaining back his lost memories, gasp! This book definitely makes me want to go and read the first five books in the series. Kerrigan Byrne is a fantastic story teller she gets you so aggravated with the characters and so engulfed in the story you lose track of time. I loved Lorelai and Ash they had such a hard road for them to go on but one so worth it in the end. A beautiful Romance and an exciting story.

ARC REVIEW The Illegitimate Duke by Sophie Barnes

The Illegitimate Duke (Diamonds in the Rough, #3)Diamonds in the Rough #3, The third and last of the Matthew siblings but not the last of the series. Don't worry each book can be read as a stand alone but it's nice if you have read the others. Juliette was the sickly one growing up after the death of their other sister they protected Juliette. Stuck in the house most of the time she had nothing to do but read, she grew to have a thirst for knowledge, particularly medicine, health, and the human body so when typhus broke out in her old neighborhood she knew right away what she wanted to do with her money. Juliette didn't just want to give St Agatha's Hospital her money and walk away she wanted to be able to have a say so on how her money was spent. Florian was content at being a doctor and the second born son but then his uncle gets elevated to Duke and names Florian as his heir and suddenly Florian is the most eligible bachelor in the country. As if the typhus epidemic wasn't bad enough and old enemy has shown his face again and this time his target is Florian.

Falling in love with Juliette was never part of the plan he feels like he's not good enough for her and the secret he's kept from everyone and the fact that he has received threats against those he loves keeps him from fully committing to her, no matter how much he may want to or how good she feels in his arms. Juliette is tired of being treated like she's made of glass, she knows she is made of sturdier things she can handle whatever problem that may come her way and convincing Florian that they are meant for each other just maybe the hardest thing ever. But when those threats come to fruition Florian will do anything to keep Juliette safe.

Overall, a fantastic read. I absolutely adore Juliette. Sophie Barnes is a great writer, the active setting transports you in time and I never have problems visualizing the story in my head with her books. The characters are strong willed and so caring the story draws you in and for me the heartfelt story and the character you end up really caring for made the whole book very much a fantastic read.

ARC REVIEW *Second Look* Some Like It Sinful by Robbie Terman

A Perfect Recipe #2, Originally published in 2013 Some like it Sinful is a delightful fake relationship which leads to something much much more kind of story. Griffin Lange is a hot shot hockey player who getting close to retirement age, all the young guys on the team look up to him and one stupid drunken night he does something stupid, really stupid. Chloe Nelson is finally achieving her dream of owning her own bakery but soon after she gets her storefront a giant chain store bakery puts up an opening soon sign on the building across the street. Chloe knows her stuff is way better but they have all that money dedicated to advertising that she doesn't have. Griffin's stupid stunt is going to have real consequences one that he just can't throw money at to solve the DA decides community service is his just dessert. The DA just happens to be Chloe's older sister who know her dilemma so she agrees to not take Griffin to court in return he helps out Chloe at the bakery.

Chloe and Griffin don't start off on the right foot. Griffin's cocky attitude pisses Chloe off but he proves to be useful too. Griffin wanted to keep this whole thing quiet but the news hears about it and suddenly it's everywhere. When the guys in the locker room ask Griffin about it, he is embarrassed about it being community service and tells his teammates that he was helping out his girlfriend. Chloe reluctantly agrees and when the hockey teams PR finds out about it the PR milks it for all it's worth. The sexual tension keeps building between Chloe and Griffin until finally right before one of his games they give in, and later Griffin wins the team their game. And because Griffin is superstitious he now believes sex with Chloe is his good luck charm. Something more meaningful is happening between the two of them but they are both too stubborn to see it. Meanwhile in Chloe has been having the weirdest issues with the bakery.

Overall, this was a fun read. Chloe and Griffin have a hard time admitting they love each other and when it all hits the fan Griffin tries to take all the blame and still sing Chloe's praises which to me is so sweet. They are a cute couple with a great story and a hot romance. Robbie Treman definitely pulls you into the story with a great narrative description and fun characters. I will be checking out more by her.

ARC REVIEW When It's Right by Victoria Denault

When It's Right (San Francisco Thunder #3)San Francisco Thunder #3, This was an emotional one that had almost as much dealing with family drama than romance, but it's a hot romance. I missed book two which I'm going to rectify as soon as I can. This one is focused on Sadie Braddock and Griffin Sullivan. Sadie is sister to the infamous Jude Braddock of the San Francisco Thunder Hockey team and Griffin is there new goalie coach. They meet when the goalie, Eli who is also Sadie's soon-to-be hopefully brother-in-law he's dating her sister Dixie, gets injured during the game and is rushed to the hospital where Sadie works as an ER nurse. Instant chemistry, they both flirt and Griffin ends up asking her out and she says yes but a bad turn of events and Griffin ends up standing Sadie up. It reminds both of them that they have other responsibilities and a love life will have to wait.

Sadie has been the rock for her family since their Dad was diagnosed with ALS. As the nurse in the family they rely on her to understand everything and explain to them so they can make plans. Sadie, however, doesn't have anyone to lean one she's the strong one, the one that keeps everyone else from falling apart. Griffin has shared custody of his daughter, his ex-wife is being a pill and has filed for full custody and says she's going to move them to New York to be with her boyfriend.  Griffin and Sadie say they are going to be friends but the attraction between them is to strong and even just one night isn't going to be enough. Griffin can't in good conscience start a relationship with someone if he has to move to New York just to stay near his daughter and with Sadie's dad's health declining she can't be away from her family. The relationship feels like it's doomed before it's even started and they both know it or are they both going to try hard enough for the chance at being happy?

Overall, between the relationship with Sadie's family and her Dad and the seemingly doomed relationship with Griffin this book had me tearing up. I enjoyed this one so much more than Score. I loved Sadie and Griffin, he is such a great dad. I love the banter and the dynamic of the Braddock family, they tease each other because they care. I love insta-love so that didn't bother me, it was well done and they tried to keep it slow but they were just too horny. Charlie, Griffin's daughter, is so freakin' cute. I enjoyed the conflict of responsibilities over personal happiness and trying to find a balance between the two. I can't wait for Winnie's story.

ARC REVIEW Through the Fire by Katie Ruggle

Through the Fire (Rocky Mountain K9 Unit, #4)Rocky Mountain K-9 Unit #4, I knew I shouldn't have started this book at night, at bedtime I got a sudden case of "Insomnia" and could not sleep. I even went as far as putting the book down but then the characters started whispering in my head telling me I was missing something so picked up the book and started reading again and around four o'clock in the morning I finished it and was finally able to fall asleep. Funny how that things work, huh? If you have read any of my previous review for this series you know how much I love this series and this author you also know I love the strong silent types and really smart ones too, Wesley March fits that bill to a T.

Kit is the newest member of the Rocky Mountain K-9 Unit and she has her bloodhound. It's her first day on the job and it already is starts off with a bang, or should I say a blazing inferno. Luckily the newest K-9 is trained in tracking people and Justice, Kit's bloodhound, is up to the task unfortunately Justice leads them straight to Jules' house. Jules has a new "Old Friend" visiting and everyone but Jules takes her at face value. Jules knows Justice wasn't wrong tracking the scent to that house, and later after another incident the same thing the bloodhound leads them straight to Jules house. It's bad enough that Kit doesn't feel like she fits in but she knows her co-workers aren't telling her everything and they don't trust her yet. So far the only one who really believes her is Wesley March. Wes is the Fire Watcher set just outside the city limits upon meeting Kit he feels a connection to her, and Wes is a loner he lives at the watchtower all year round, rarely makes it into town for supplies but after meeting Kit he finds any excuse to see her. Kit is quite taken with Wes as well.

The Peace never lasts for long in Monroe and soon the life Jules and the kids have built here starts to fall apart with the appearance of yet another stranger. Overall, this was a great conclusion to the series. Wes is so freakin' adorable I want one of my own. Justice and the other dogs make the book along with the kids. Katie Ruggle never ceases to amaze me with the crap she puts her characters through. The series is really one that should be read in order because it all ties in together but it's a great series.

I can not elaborate on the plot more than the blurb because I am scared of spoilers. Needless to say this is the conclusion of Rook and Stephanie's story and boy it's a doozie. I was able to guess certain aspects of the story just because in my mind that was the only way it could have happened. But the end left me all giddy and satisfied.
MJP writing as always is tremendous, her active setting sweeps you away to that Fantasy Island. First person POV that alternates between Stephanie and Rook, which is the first time we get Rook's perspective on things and that really adds to the story. Of course no MJP story would be complete without the smartassed heroine, Stephanie, making inopportune remarks, which gives this dark romance a great sense of humor. For all the twists and turns and the merry chase MJP led us on it ends fantastically.

The Charm of You is a new book from Jennifer Probst it's her first book in the LWW. In the book Presley Cabot is one of the owners and founders of LWW, Ladies Who Write, well in real life the LWW is a group of seven authors who got together "to bring sexy love stories and emotional romance to our readers' lives. What's better than a fun, sensual ride to a happily ever after?" Sounds awesome right? Well this is just the beginning and lets hope we get many more books.

At first I wasn't thrilled about the guy falling in love with the girl after she lost a whole bunch of weight but through the flashbacks Presley kept having we learn he liked her even back then when she was overweight. Through the flashbacks you really see how naive she was because to me it was obvious what was going on with Nolan even if it was from her POV. In keeping with Jennifer Probst fantastic writing style this book full of humor, heartfelt emotions, and characters that become more real than fiction.

She’d known all along he’d lied about his identity in order to secure this appointment. Admiration flowed through him, along with a strange punch in his gut that urged him closer. The spicy scent of orange blossoms and clove filled the air, making him want to breathe deeper. “How did you know?” he asked, stopping on the opposite side of the monstrous espresso structure that held two oversized monitors, dozens of papers, and a toppling pile of books. “I thought I covered my tracks nicely.”

She gave a half shrug and reached for her Starbucks cup, seemingly already bored with his conversation. “You’re predictable.”

Male pride stung, he still couldn’t help laughing. Why did he have to be attracted to a woman who gave him shit? Would be so much easier to find a more complacent partner for an affair. Unfortunately, Nolan knew it was way too late for him. He was officially smitten. “Then I’ll have to up my game.”

Another shrug. “Maybe you have no game left.” She sipped her coffee and studied him, those stunning eyes shielding her secrets. He ached to know every detail about this woman, but knew he’d have his work cut out for him.

“Come to lunch with me and find out.”

She tilted her head. Tapped her index finger again those bee stung lips as if considering. “Why?”

Her question delighted him. “Because the moment you walked into my brewery I haven’t been able to get you off my mind.”

“How sweet.” She fluttered her lashes. “Too bad I forgot you the moment I walked out of your brewery.”

He dropped into the chair opposite the massive desk and hooked his foot over his knee. He made no attempt to hide his naked admiration for those amazing legs or the brazen way she challenged him to go and try. Her foot flexed, lifting the spiked heel, and those sleek muscles clenched under golden skin. His dick practically wept and got strangled in his jeans. “Ouch. What if I confessed you were the first woman in a long while to intrigue me?”

“Yeah? What intrigues you so much?”

He warmed up to the topic. “Besides your rapier wit, and superior intelligence? Your eyes. When I look into your eyes, I seem to lose track of time. I don’t want to be anywhere else.”

Was it possible she actually looked bored with his compliment? She gave a long-suffering sigh, regarding him like he was mentally challenged. “Please tell me you have better things in your arsenal. And you better upgrade from that Peter Gabriel song because it’s been overdone. I spend every Saturday with a personal trainer who makes me throw up for fun, so I really don’t want to hear about my pretty eyes or wit. Go ahead and bring it. Tell me I have a slamming body and get creative, dude, or I’m throwing you out and you won’t get another chance to bang me.”

God, she was magnificent.

ARC REVIEW Shifters of SoHo by J.S. Striker

Shifters of SoHo: Salazar & CrimsonShifters of Soho, This is the third installment of the series. It introduces new characters and old. Salazar we met previously in Dean, he was the mute vampire how was imprisoned by the slave traders. Crimson was introduced in Rigby the shifter who helped them escape the mountain. In this new boxed set Salazar and Crimson have been captured on put in cages along with three other people, well... a Wood Fairy, a siren/vampire half breed, and a human.

Salazar: Trapped in a cage again Salazar again with the help of his fellow captives escape in the midst of escaping he gets chained to the young human boy, Pix. On the run in an unfamiliar forest the five of them work together to safe. When the wood fairy, Khalil, gets injured Crimson reveals what he is in order to save him. Afterwards they split up Crimson with Khalil one way and Salazar, Jison the siren/vampire, and Pix another. It takes Salazar long enough to realize Pix is in fact a woman and not a young man. Pix was trapped on this plan with her sister but when the traders caught them Pix pretended to be a boy to avoid the fate of her sister. Pairing off with this band of mixed match riff raff is her only was to get back to the marketplace and then back home to SoHo. Falling for Salazar was definitely never part of the plan.

Once again Striker writes an epic like story in novella length. So much happens it nonstop and it's a great adventure. Salazar and Pix were a fun couple.

Crimson: After Khalil and Crimson left the others they ended up in SoHo looking for Khalil's mate. After many failed blind dates Khalil finds one that doesn't think he's strange but rather quirky. Crimson isn't sure about her. Alison has no choice the black witches have her mother and unless she delivers Crimson to them they will kill her mother. Nothing ever goes as planned and the portal to deliver Crimson to the black witches screws up and they end up in the middle of nowhere with the added baggage of Khalil tagging along. Crimson has no plans on giving himself over to the black witches but he does promise to help get her mother back. Crimson and Alison try to fight the attraction but being thrown together in life and death situations creates a bond between them that they can't deny even in the end.

Another great story. Overall between Salazar and Crimson this is a great set. Exciting adventures humorous situations and heartfelt romance.

FOREVER SUMMER READING with Christie Craig

What’s in Christie Craig’s travel bag?
Between conferences, family visits, and weekend getaways, summer usually means a lot of hopping on planes and going places.  And there are several things that always fly the skies with me.

T    The under-the-seat bag: Don’t tell anyone, but I’m short.  And getting a bag into the overhead bins can be real B with an itch for me. So, I love these under-the-seat bags that are easy to travel with and keep all my must-haves, like my computer (yes, I work on planes if I don’t have a nosy neighbor and am not working on a sexy scene) or a book, in reach.

·      Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara:  Weekend getaways normally don’t require a lot of makeup.  But I will almost always add a touch of mascara.  And for the longest time I’ve been unhappy with my go-to mascara.  After trying about six different ones, I picked up this brand and know I’d found my favorite.

·       Olay Total Effects 7 in One Face Cream:  Growing up, we had a swimming pool, and I spent my share of time in the sun. And while I’m not the type to worry too much about a few lines on my face, I found I really like this anti-aging moisturizer. And it has sun screen in it so it a big win-win for summer.

·        Chapstick:  The best beauty tip I’ve even gotten was to smile more. Nothing lights up a face more than a smile.  But nothing will stop me smiling more than dry and cracked lips. Keeping a chapstick in my purse helps keep my smiles coming.

·       Hand Lotion:  I was never a big lotion person until I heard that one of the first places a woman shows her age is on her hands. Since then, I’ve found I always keep some close by. And this one comes in a great purse size.

·        The book going with me on my next trip: The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah.  I can’t wait to read this one.  After telling another writer Friend, Colleen Thompson, about my upcoming book, Don’t Breathe a Word and its ties to domestic violence, she said I needed to read this one. And since every book she’s ever recommended appealed to me, I’m picking it up. I also found out that the book just sold movie rights.

About Say A Sweet Prayer:

The sleepy little New Jersey township has been relatively quiet as plans for the wedding of Claire Goodnite and Wesley O’Connell are in full swing. But when the patrons of the church’s singles group are being picked off one by one and branded with a scarlet letter in blood, Claire and the team put their festivities on hold to track down a killer.   It’s just another case, another day in the life of a police officer until tragedy strikes their small circle of friends. When one of their own becomes one of the victims, how will the group go on? Or more importantly, can Claire survive it?   It’s probably best you say your prayers . . .

I gasp, feeling the band tighten around my chest as the nightmare leaves me in its wake. Fuck, it’s still happening. A small part of me had hoped that with my life finally becoming normal that the dreams would go away. But you know what they say about hope being a fickle bitch and all that . . .

My body is covered in a sheen of sweat, my head is pounding with the drums of the old Salvation Army band, and my stomach is roiling. I jump up and run to the bathroom, dropping down to my knees just in time to lose my very expensive celebratory dinner and champagne.
My body stiffens when I feel a hand brush my hair back from my face.

“Too much champagne?” he asks with a note of humor in his voice. The miserable bastard would just love for me to be hungover.
“Yeah,” I whisper.
“Claire?” he asks. I hate the worry in his voice. I hate that I put it there. I thought I had escaped—that I was finally free—but I’m not free, I’ll never be free. I’ve brought Wes straight into hell with me and I hate that most of all.
“Just let it go, Wes.” My voice is rough in desperation, for him to leave it alone, to leave me to my own devices, I don’t know which.
“No,” he grounds out his voice firm. I hang my head unwilling to look at him yet. I can’t stand that this is how he sees me, at my lowest, covered in sweat with the scent of vomit in the air.
“Wes—” I begin to plead but he stops me before I can even get the words out.
“No!” he shouts. “No, I won’t let it go and no, I won’t go away. I want in there, Claire.
You have to let me in, baby.” He’s pleading, and I can’t stand the desperation in his voice or the knowledge that I am solely responsible for it.
“It’s too dark, Wes,” I whisper. “I can’t drag you further into hell with me.”
Wes drops down onto his knees behind me, wrapping his arms around me as if he can block the world from seeping on to my shoulders. In this moment, Wes is my shield, my protector, my big, bad warrior and I know in my heart that with him I can do anything, be anything, but without him, I don’t even want to try.
“I’ve already been to hell, honey,” he says softly, his chin resting on my shoulder, reminding me that he has been to hell and knows its demons on a first name basis. “Let me walk in there with you. Let me be your light in the dark.”
“It’s not that easy.”
“But what if it is?” He asks softly. “What if together we can beat it back?”
“I just don’t know,” I say softly, my voice harsh. “I’m so scared.”
“I know, baby.” His arms grip tighter around me, easing the invisible band around my chest. “Let me be your light.”
 “You already are.”
And in this moment, I realize the veracity of my words. The power they hold rings true for both of us. No longer have I craved the bite of my own bullet and while I struggle with the nightmares, the trauma that still lives inside me, twisting me up, I no longer feel alone, because I’m not. Maybe, just maybe, we can beat back the darkness, together. Wes is right, it’s time to let him in. If we’re really lucky, I won’t drag him into hell with me, but he might just be able to help me pull myself out once and for all.
“Then let’s go back to bed,” he whispers.
“Okay.”
